Eat Your Produce for Better Bone Health

According to a recent study at the University of Surrey in Surrey, England, potassium salts (bicarbonate and citrate), which are plentiful in fruit and vegetables, play an important role in improving bone health. The results also showed that these potassium salts contained in fruits and vegetable reduce bone resorption, the process by which bone is broken down, therefore increasing their strength.
Published in the journal Osteoporosis International, this study also revealed that high intake of potassium salts significantly reduces the excretion of calcium and acid in urine.
“This means that excess acid is neutralized and bone mineral is preserved,” said lead study author, Dr. Helen Lambert from the University of Surrey.
This study shows that eating more fruits and vegetables could be a way to improve the strength of our bones and prevent osteoporosis. Fruits highest in potassium are dried apricots, prunes, dates, dried currants and raisins, dates, dried figs, dried coconut, avocados, bananas, kiwi fruit, and nectarines and peaches. Vegetables with the highest potassium content include sun dried tomatoes, spinach, Swiss chard, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, kale, Brussel sprouts, zucchini, green snap beans and asparagus.

The talk will be given by our associate chiropractor, Dr. Jessica Nardone. This interactive session will address all you need to know to keep your back healthy and feeling good for life, including demonstrations of effective exercises and stretches as well as demonstrations of what not to do with your back.
Dr. Nardone will do posture analysis for talk attendees, correcting posture mistakes and giving good posture tips.

An Avocado a Day May Help Keep Heart Disease Away

For years, this delicious green fruit (yes, they are a fruit, not a vegetable) has been avoided by many due to its high fat content. According to a study published this month in the Journal of the American Heart Association, eating one avocado a day as part of a heart healthy, cholesterol-lowering moderate-fat diet can help improve bad cholesterol levels in overweight and obese individuals.
Researchers evaluated the effect avocados had on cardiovascular risk factors by replacing saturated fatty acids from an average American diet with unsaturated fatty acids from avocados. In other words, avocado fat is healthy fat, and the luscious green fruit is also one of the best natural sources for potassium.
Many people are accustomed to eating avocados only in the form of guacamole, which pairs the fruit with chips that are usually fried and high in sodium. A healthier way to enjoy an avocado is in a green salad, on a sandwich with low fat protein and high fiber bread, with a vegetable dish, with lean protein foods like chicken or fish, or just sliced in half and scooped out with a spoon.
So here’s one easy dietary change that can help you towards your 2015 good health goals!
