Moderate Exercise IS Beneficial!

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. T:

As Americans, we tend to have an “all or nothing” mentality – as in “go big or go home!” But according to a new study released by the American Heart Association, with exercise, that isn’t necessarily so.

Middle-aged women who are physically active just a few times per week have lower risks of heart disease, stroke and blood clots than inactive women, according to research in the American Heart Association journal Circulation. Surprisingly, more frequent physical activity didn’t result in further reductions in risk, researchers said.

Physical activities associated with reduced risk included walking, gardening, and cycling.

In the study, women who performed strenuous physical activity — enough to cause sweating or a faster heart beat — two to three times per week were about 20 percent less likely to develop heart disease, strokes or blood clots compared to participants who reported little or no activity. Among active women, there was little evidence of further risk reductions with more frequent activity.

Participants included 1.1 million women in the United Kingdom with no history of cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots, or diabetes who joined the Million Women study in 1996-2001. Their average age when they joined the study was 56.

So, as it turns out, a little exercise goes a long way toward good health

Until next time….

Magnesium: A Must-Have Mineral for Good Health

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. T:

Most Americans would greatly benefit from increasing their intake of magnesium. Magnesium is found in foods such as nuts, seeds, leafy greens, peas, beans and whole grains. Supplementation is also a good way to increase this vital nutrient while not increasing caloric intake.

Few people are truly deficient in magnesium, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has declared magnesium to be a shortfall nutrient, meaning there is a high prevalence of inadequate dietary intake of magnesium. Those at highest risk are people who can’t absorb nutrients well, those who have chronic gastrointestinal issues and people who drink alcohol excessively and don’t eat a balanced diet. Also, female athletes and people on restrictive diets are more likely to be low in this micronutrient.

The body typically contains about 25 grams of magnesium. Magnesium is critical for the generation of energy and it is used to power enzymes, increase RNA/DNA synthesis during cell growth and division, and support bone/mineral homeostasis. Also important to note, magnesium has long been examined for its support of healthy cardiovascular function and the normal processing of glucose.

The next time you are in our office, let’s talk about magnesium and if increasing your intake of this important mineral could make a difference to your good health!

Until next time…
