Healthy Eating and Diabetes

In last week’s email, I mentioned that a change to a healthier diet can contribute to preventing diabetes and keeping prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes.  But where do you start?

It’s a good idea to take a close look at your diet to get a sense of what you may be eating that is causing your blood sugar to fluctuate and spike.  Keeping a food diary for an entire week can be very revealing.  Write down everything you eat or drink and what time of day you ingest it.  Then you will have a good record for your own review that you can share with your doctor.

I highly recommend the book The Zone by Dr. Barry Sears for solid information on what to eat so that the blood sugar does not roller coaster, which can lead to diabetes.  The Zone Diet was developed by Dr. Sears more than 30 years ago to reduce diet-induced inflammation.  The primary ingredients are low-fat protein, colorful carbohydrates, and fat that is low in both saturated fat and omega-6 fats. The secret is balancing these ingredients to get the appropriate hormonal responses at each meal.   According to Dr. Sears, the less white (white bread, white rice, white pasta, and white potatoes) you put on your plate, the less cellular inflammation you are going to create.  Research suggests that inflammation inside the body plays a role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

Why Are So Many People Being Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes?

What is diabetes? Diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal levels. This is also called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.  If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly, which is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. Over time it isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.

According to the American Diabetes Association’s National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014, in 2012, nearly 10% of Americans – 29.1 million people – had diabetes.  A small segment, 1.25 million, had type 1 diabetes, which is almost always hereditary, unlike type 2 diabetes, which is almost always lifestyle related.  According to the study, of the 29.1 million, 21 million were diagnosed, and 8.1 million were undiagnosed.  The incidence of diabetes in 2012 was 1.7 million new diagnoses/year; in 2010 it was 1.9 million. In 2012, 86 million Americans age 20 and older had prediabetes; this is up from 79 million in 2010.

Risk for diabetes goes up if you have a family history or if you are overweight.  Age is also a risk factor for diabetes as a person’s risk increases after age 45.  However, the number of teens diagnosed with prediabetes and diabetes is growing. For this age group, poor eating choices are their number one risk factor.

So how can you and your loved ones keep from becoming part of these startling statistics?

A change to a healthier diet and a more active lifestyle can prevent diabetes and keep prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes.  Where do you start?
