New-Year-Eve-03

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

It seems like 2015 has just begun, and already we are ushering in a New Year!  Make 2016 great by starting out with a healthy New Year’s Eve celebration.  Here’s a recipe for a crunchy, delicious and nutritious treat certain to be a hit on your appetizer table!

Mississippi Spiced Pecans – from Eating Well Magazine, December 2007

1 pound pecan halves

1 tablespoon packed dark brown sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt

1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme

1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Cayenne pepper to taste (a pinch or more)

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Preheat oven to 350°F.  Spread pecans on a large baking sheet. Roast until fragrant, about 12 minutes. Watch carefully so they don’t burn.

Combine brown sugar, sea salt, thyme, rosemary, pepper and cayenne pepper in a small bowl. Transfer the roasted pecans to a large bowl, drizzle with oil and toss well to coat completely. Sprinkle with the spice mixture and toss again. Serve warm or let cool completely and store in an airtight container.

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Are you or is someone you love gluten intolerant?  Here’s a festive pasta salad recipe from Rachael Ray and the Food Network that I adapted to gluten free and made for our holiday office party.  Everyone loved it!

Gluten Free Holiday Pasta Salad  CM33

Ingredients

Sea Salt
One package of brown rice or brown rice/quinoa pasta (or if no one has a gluten problem, you can use one package fresh mushroom or chicken prosciutto or spinach filled tortellini available on dairy aisle in most markets)
Two handfuls fresh baby spinach
One (15-ounce) can baby artichoke hearts in water, drained and chopped
¾ of a red roasted bell pepper, drained and chopped (if you don’t want to roast a fresh pepper use ones in jars)
1/2 small red onion, chopped
One clove garlic, cracked from skin
One lemon, zested
Two teaspoons lemon juice, the juice of one wedge
Two tablespoons red wine vinegar, a couple of splashes
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
One tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped or 1/2 teaspoon dried leaves, eyeball it
Black pepper
One handful of sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil, coarsely chopped

Directions

Cook pasta according to package directions and drain well.

Coarsely chop baby spinach. Combine with artichoke pieces, roasted red pepper and red onion. Chop garlic, then add sea salt to it and mash it into a paste with the flat of your knife. Transfer garlic paste to a small bowl and add lemon zest, lemon juice and vinegar to it. Whisk in oil, thyme and pepper. Add pasta and sun-dried tomatoes to the salad. Dress salad and gently toss. Serve or refrigerate.

Reducing Holiday Stress

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

As the classic Christmas song goes, “It’s the hap-happiest season of all!”  But for many, the holidays can be a difficult, stressful time.  Here are some healthy tips for avoiding holiday stress and making it your happiest season of all!

  • Keep nutrition in balance.  Be sure to eat ample portions of fresh vegetables and low-fat protein, keep carbs low and drink plenty of water.
  • Be nourished.  Make sure to take your vitamins and supplements daily.
  • Get plenty of sleep.   With holiday gatherings and late night jaunts to the mall to shop for goodies, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle.    Don’t neglect your zzz’s.
  • And stay away from toxic people.  If there are family members who push your buttons (easy for them – they installed them!), be courteous but keep the visit brief.

Our holiday hours… Have a healthy holiday by making your appointments early as next week is…Christmas!  We will be open on Monday, December 21 and Wednesday, December 23, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm (closed 1:30 – 3:00 pm for lunch) and closed Friday, December 25 and Saturday, December 26 so that our staff can celebrate with family and friends.  New Year’s week we will be open Monday, December 28 and Wednesday, December 30, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm (closed 1:30 – 3:00 pm for lunch) and closed on Friday, January 1 and Saturday, January 2.

Avoiding Colds and Flu during the Holidays

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

We’re in the middle of cold and flu season, so here are some tips for staying healthy as we sail through the holidays:

  • Wash your hands more often and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.  Germs and viruses gain access to our bodies through our eyes, nasal passages, mouth and ears.
  • Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, and fresh salads, focusing on consuming chemical-free, whole foods.
  • Maintain stable blood sugar by eliminating sugar and sugary products from your diet.  (Easier said than done during the holidays!)  Sugar has been proven to weaken the cells of our immune system.
  • Vitamin C and Echinacea (herb or tea) have been proven as immune boosters when taken at the beginning of the cold and flu season.
  • Get good sleep.  Consistent, adequate sleep is vitally important to overall health and a well-functioning immune system.
  • Don’t forget water.  Make sure to maintain your usual hydration, especially if you choose to consume alcoholic beverages.  Alcohol dehydrates the system and leaves it vulnerable to illness.
  • Most of all, enjoy the season!

Our monthly special for December is $10 off a half hour massage for a gift…or for you!  The regular price for our half hour massage is $45, but for the month of December, mention the secret password “heavenly” and pay only $35 for a massage for you or a holiday gift certificate. Join us in giving to those less fortunate this holiday season … The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program provides new clothing or toys for children of families in need through the support of donors.  Thorburn Chiropractic has angel tags with the first name, age and gender of a child in need of presents available to their patients. Contributors take one or more tags and purchase appropriate gifts for the child or children described on the tags.  Stop by and pick up yours!

Who Knew? There are Health Benefits to Being Generous!

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Forget about Black Friday and Cyber Monday…I choose to celebrate Giving Tuesday! Studies have shown that being a generous person can lead to better health.

It may lower blood pressure. Helping out friends and family could be one way to boost your cardiovascular health this holiday season. One study found that people who supported others had lower blood pressure. Why not bring a homemade meal to a friend who’s caring for someone else this holiday season? Help a charity or someone you know.

It can help reduce stress. A recent study found that stingy behavior increases stress. Researchers asked 156 volunteers to play a bargaining game and decide how to divide a sum of money. Using heart rate monitors, they found players who made low offers (below 40% of the total) experienced increased heart rate and stress levels compared to those who made high offers. The moral? Give some away.

It could help you live longer. Lending a hand for small tasks may end up boosting your longevity. In a 2013 study of 846 people who helped others by running errands or doing chores seemed to be protected from the negative impact of stress. People who didn’t help others had a 30% higher risk of dying during the study if they reported having a stressful life event. If a member of your family always cooks the holiday dinner, it might not be a bad idea to pitch in this year with the meal.

It can boost your mood. Research shows that giving money away can feel just as good as receiving it. For a 2007 study in Science, researchers used brain imaging technology on 19 women to see how certain regions were activated when they either kept $100 or gave it to a local food bank. Turns out the same pleasure-related centers in the brain that lit up in those who took the money also went off in those who donated the money—even more so when the decision was voluntary and not required by researchers. Whether you drop some change into a charity bucket or send a larger sum to your favorite nonprofit, you can’t go wrong this holiday season with a little giving.

And here’s some more news you can use…
