Could GMOs Be a Real Health Threat? Part 2

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Last week, we looked at what GMOs are, the most common GMO foods and foods that contain hidden GMOs.  This week we will get some input from a couple of experts in the GMO research field and discuss the controversy over GMO labeling.

Jonathan Latham is a scientist with master’s degree in crop genetics and a Ph.D. in plant virology.  Along with his wife, scientist Allison Wilson, Dr. Latham founded the Bioscience Resource Project, a nonprofit organization with a mission “to provide the highest quality scientific information and analysis to enable a healthy food system and a healthy world.”

In a recent interview published on the Mercola.com website, Dr. Latham stated that evidence shows that the process of genetic engineering is very imprecise and may produce harmful and potentially toxic results. [1]  He also has serious concerns that the U.S. regulatory system allows unsafe products to be brought to market.

Dr. Latham stated that he has heard of researchers getting their grant funding pulled and having to change fields due to their findings and objections to the progress of GMOs in our food supply.

The nonprofit Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) was founded in 2003 by bestselling author and GMO expert Jeffrey Smith.  The IRT website (www.responsibletechnology.org) contains valuable information for the consumer including GMO education, resources including a non-GMO shopping guide and a call to action in your own home and community.

An interesting article and study on the IRT website indicates that the proliferation of GMO foods and the affect of chemical residue (gylphosate) from Round Up weed killer used in growing these GMO foods may be contributing to the now 18 million Americans with gluten sensitivity. [2]  Wheat has been hybridized over the years but today is not GMO (GMO wheat seeds are in the works).  According to the Non-GMO Project, GMOs are in over 80% of conventionally processed foods in North America. [3]

Despite the protest of consumers across the state, in 2014 California lawmakers rejected the GMO Labeling Bill.

Just two years before, Monsanto – makers of Round Up and Round Up ready GMO seeds – spent $46 million to kill Proposition 37, a California ballot initiative that would have mandated GMO labeling.

What can you do to avoid GMO foods?

Keep current on what’s going on with GMOs by signing up for an enewsletter from your choice of informational non-GMO websites.  Cook whole foods at home whenever possible.  And when you go shopping, look for foods that voluntarily label that they are non-GMO.

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building the non-GMO food supply, educating consumers, and providing non-GMO choices.  The colorful Non-GMO Project label is front and center on all products they have certified as non-GMO.

Could GMOs Be a Real Health Threat? Part 1

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Whether we like it or not, GMOs are a part of the American dietary landscape and they are something we all need to become more informed about.  I thought I would take a couple of weeks to discuss what they are, why they are here and what you personally can do about them.

Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs are found in up to 80% of the food sold in American supermarkets.   A GMO is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal.  The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. 1

The top ten most common GMO foods are soy, corn, canola oil, cotton (cottonseed oil), milk (cows are given hormones to develop and produce milk faster), sugar, aspartame, zucchini, yellow squash and papaya.

Most fresh produce, with the exception of those listed above, are non-GMO.  Dried beans, grains, nuts and seeds are non-GMO.  Meats, unless they are organically raised, have been fed GMO corn.

The easiest way to avoid GMOs is to buy food – especially any packaged food — that is 100% organic.  Every day more and more foods proclaim on their labels and in their advertising that they are non-GMO.  Non-GMO is desirable.  Food the way nature made it.  It’s time to learn more.

Why GMOs?  Stock answers from food manufacturers include that science is finding ways to make heartier plants that are better able to withstand weather and come to harvest in less time.  Who could argue feeding more people quicker with the ever growing world population?  It is interesting to note that over half of the 28 European Union countries want nothing to do with GMOs.

GMOs are hidden in a variety of foods.  For example, high fructose corn syrup is a common inexpensive sweetener made from corn that is used in sodas, juice drinks and ice tea mixes as well as prepared foods including breakfast cereals, cookies and cakes, condiments and more.  Most often the kind of corn used to make high fructose corn syrup is GMO.  And then there is corn starch, which is used in so many prepared foods.

Canola oil is commonly used in packaged salad dressing (as is soy oil), chips and sauces while cottonseed oil is often found in cereals, breads and snack foods.  And unless these products are certified organic, it is likely that the oils used to make them are GMO.

Another GMO controversy revolves around Round Up, the herbicide produced by Monsanto.  Round Up’s active ingredient is glyphosate, which when consumed has been shown to cause nutritional deficiencies, especially minerals, and system toxicity.  The World Health Organization’s cancer authority, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, has determined that glyphosate “is probably carcinogenic to humans.”  Monsanto’s first Round Up ready crops – which means the plants have been engineered to stand up to Round Up exposure so that the herbicide can be used to get rid of accompanying weeds – was soy, introduced in 1996.  Current Round Up ready crops include soy, corn, canola, alfalfa, cotton and sorghum with wheat in development.  Round Up ready seeds are sterile, so that farmers can no longer use the best seeds from a previous crop.  Each year they must buy new seeds from Monsanto.

No one really knows what affect this bombardment of GMOs on the American diet will have over a period of years, even generations.  Next week I will share some information on what some knowledgeable scientists are saying about GMOs and studies that caution us against going down the road we are traveling.

Tips for Getting Back on Track After the Holidays

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

I hope you had a great holiday season and that you had plenty of opportunities to spend time with special friends and family.  Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to abolish unhealthy habits and get back to basics!  Here are some simple tips to help you get started.

  1. Reduce Stress… Returning to a daily schedule can be the first step towards getting back on track.  Make sure to go to bed on time.  Avoid alcohol. Get back to the hobbies that you enjoy.  Add one more daily routine to your life – support your stress glands (called adrenals) so you can better tolerate stress.  Find out which supplement will perfectly nourish and support your stress glands.  The next time you are in our office, ask us about Nutritional Response Therapy (NRT) and how it can benefit you.
  2. Cut Out Overeating…Over the holidays we tend to skip meals, overindulge with others and add things to our diet that we would normally avoid.  Like a shot of whipped cream in your morning coffee or several cookies with lunch.  Now is a good time to look at what you’re eating and when, and get back to a healthy balance of lean protein, vegetables and a minimal amount of carbohydrates.  And plenty of fresh water daily.  Take a look at your portion sizes and reel in excess.
  3. Be Active Daily…A daily activity can start out as simple as a walk around your neighborhood or the local mall.  Every journey has its start, so don’t hesitate and get going!  And when you get warmed up from daily walks, explore options for fitness classes in your community, from the local Y to senior centers.  Daily activity will make a huge difference in your overall health and well-being.

Detox for a Healthy New Year – our January special… Now is a great time to commit to a healthier you for 2016!  For the month of January, we are offering our 21 Day Purification Program for a big savings – the regular price is $210 but in January, pay only $165!  Feeling sluggish after way too much holiday indulgence?  Have sugar and carbs become the norm?  Are you hungry for good health?  Experience the benefits of helping your body cleanse with our 21 Day Purification Program. The purification program combines a generous menu of whole foods with supplements and a daily protein shake that support the body’s ability to remove naturally occurring toxins.

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

I’d like to start off the New Year by introducing you to the newest member of our wellness team, acupuncturist Daphne Lim L.Ac.

Daphne is a nationally board certified Acupuncturist and Herbalist. She uses acupuncture as a tool to help areas that need healing. She utilizes traditional forms of acupuncture, trigger point therapy, individualized herbal formulas and more to support health goals. Her expertise includes acupuncture to increase fertility as well as for facial rejuvenation.  Cosmetic acupuncture, an ancient beauty secret, is used to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.  Treatment results in healthy, glowing skin.  Increased collagen production nourishes, oxygenates, and moisturizes from the inside out.

Ms. Lim grew up in the Los Angeles area.  Following high school graduation, she ventured to New York City where she attended Fordham University.  She developed a painful knee injury, and friends recommended that she try acupuncture as a remedy.   She had such a profoundly positive experience with her first treatment that it led her to changing her area of study to Oriental Medicine.  “I actually limped into the acupuncturist’s office,” said Daphne, “and I walked out healed and on my way!”

Daphne studied acupuncture at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, the largest school of Oriental Medicine in the United States.  Simultaneously, she worked at the renowned herbal apothecary Kamwo Meridian Herbs in New York City. Here Daphne received practical experience healing with Oriental herbs at this family-owned business steeped in hundreds of years of knowledge.

Before returning to Los Angeles and going into private practice, Ms. Lim provided acupuncture services at a noted fertility clinic in New York City.

Daphne is currently working towards her Doctorate of Oriental Medicine which she hopes to have completed by summer of 2016.
