Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:
OK, so no more blaring music or the din of the nightly news during mealtime. If you want to eat less, according to researchers, hearing the sound of your food is just the sensory cue you may need.
Researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University have found that the noise your food makes while you’re eating it can have a significant effect on how much food you eat.
The “Crunch Effect,” as they call it, suggests you’re likely to eat less if you’re more conscious of the sound your food makes while you’re eating.
The effect comes from the sound of mastication: chewing, chomping, and crunching. As it turns out, the sounds we are told from childhood to keep at bay when in proper company may be the key to one of the most common problems we Americans have in our diet — portion control.
So next time you eat, turn off all outside noise and tune in to the sweet sounds of your food.
The study was recently published in the academic journal Food Quality and Preference.
