Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Making plans for a Memorial Day Weekend barbecue?  Here is a simple, easy recipe that can be paired with just about anything on the grill – or served to your vegetarian friends as well.

Here’s wishing you a relaxing, safe and sane holiday weekend!

Quinoa and Snap Pea Salad (yields six one cup servings)

Ingredients:

2 cups water

1 cup quinoa

2 cups fresh snap peas, trimmed and cut diagonally into quarters

1 1/2 cups button mushrooms, cut into quarters or more if they are large

1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion, cut into ½ inch lengths

1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

1/3 cup white balsamic vinegar or white wine vinegar

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil

1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon pure maple syrup

Combine water and quinoa in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside to cool completely. Chill if a cold salad is desired.

Combine peas, mushrooms, onion and dill in a medium bowl. Whisk vinegar, oil, lemon zest, lemon juice and maple syrup in a small bowl. Stir the dressing into the cooled quinoa. Add the quinoa to the vegetable mixture, toss and serve. Enjoy!

Could it be What’s on Your Fork?

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

When is an allergy not an allergy at all?  When it is a food sensitivity.

Food sensitivities can result in symptoms such as headaches, dark circles under the eyes, nasal congestion not associated with pollens, sore throats, aches and pains, fatigue and even a “fuzzy” brain.

While it’s not an allergy in the usual sense, it is a chemical change in the body that affects you.   Allergies and food sensitivities are both immune systems issues.

Food sensitivities can be difficult to determine and diagnose, mostly because we Americans eat such a wide variety of foods each day.  Dairy products, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, gluten, corn, soy, sugar, corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, beef, pork, lamb and coffee are common foods that cause food sensitivities.  But we humans are all very individual, so we can be sensitive to just about any food group.

Through a non-invasive screening process called Nutrition Deficiency Testing, we can determine what it is that is stressing your system so you can eliminate that particular food from your diet and relieve your chronic symptoms.

Call our office today to find out about our special offer for your first test to see if you have food sensitivities.

What Are Allergies, Anyway?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

What are allergies, anyway, and why are they aggravating me and so many of my loved ones this year?

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases. An allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a substance as harmful and overreacts to it. Chronic allergy sufferers can certainly relate to that statement!

Pollen is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. Many people know pollen allergy as “hay fever.” Doctors usually refer to pollen allergy as “seasonal allergic rhinitis.”

Grasses are the most common cause of allergy, and ragweed is a main cause of weed allergies. Other common sources of weed pollen include sagebrush, pigweed, lamb’s quarters and tumbleweed. Certain species of trees, including birch, cedar and oak, also produce highly allergenic pollen.

The frequent high winds we have been experiencing over the past few weeks have certainly compounded allergy problems this year, whipping up a frenzy of blowing pollen and dust.

Here are some allergy facts courtesy of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America:

  • Researchers indicate that nasal allergies affect about 50 million people in the United States.
  • Allergies are increasing. They affect as many as 30 percent of adults and 40 percent of children.
  • In 2012, 11.1 million people were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis.

It is interesting to note that plants fertilized by insects, such as roses, and some flowering trees such as cherry and pear trees, usually do not cause allergic rhinitis.

Relieve Your Allergies the Natural Way

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

We are in the height of allergy season, so much so that the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has named the month of May National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.

It seems that everywhere you turn, people are coughing and sneezing, suffering from one of the most intense allergy seasons we’ve seen in California in many years. I’m hearing from patients and friends who have never had a problem with seasonal allergies, asking me, “What can I do?”  From a constant cough and post-nasal drip to sticky eyes and sneezing, these symptoms just don’t seem to let up.

So what can you do about your allergies?

I recommend a line of natural supplements, available only through doctors, called Standard Process that features a number of products which are extremely effective for the relief of allergies.

Throughout the month of May 2016, I’m offering the allergy relief and respiratory products below for 20% off!

Allerplex:  Supports the body’s response to seasonal, environmental and dietary stressors. Supports healthy liver function, manage mucous movement and healthy lung and respiratory function.

Antronex:  Supports detoxification via the liver and allows the liver to produce more natural antihistamines.

Cal-Amo:  Maintains proper ph balance.

Drenamin: Helps the body fight everyday stressors that can overload the immune system. Improves energy, mood, sleep and well-being.

Emphaplex: Combines vitamins, minerals and glandular nutrients to support respiratory system health.

Fen-Gre:  Fenugreek is the main ingredient and it is used to maintain the body’s natural respiratory function. Maintains healthy mucous and phlegm in the lungs and bronchial tubes.

Pneumotrophin PMG: Supports healthy lung function.

Which of these is best for you?  The next time you are in the office, tell me about your allergy issues and I’ll get you on the natural road to feeling so much better!

Until next time…
