Why Do I Have Three Pounds of Organisms in My Gut?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

How can I possibly have three pounds of organisms in my gut?  I mean, I eat healthy foods, I eliminate twice a day, I drink plenty of water, I get plenty of exercise and…

Relax!  Having these organisms — at least the good ones — in your gut is a healthy thing!  And believe it or not, it’s been proven that every person has at least one organism in their gut that is unique to them only – a signature organism, if you will.

Yes, at any given time, there are 100 trillion bacteria circulating around the walls of your intestines.

If you are eating as much sugar as the average American – about 100 pounds a year – then you are feeding the bad bacteria rather than nourishing the good bacteria that keeps you healthy. Digestive symptoms indicative of too much bad gut bacteria include constipation, excess gas, chronic diarrhea and chronic bad breath.

Good bacteria, on the other hand, spend their time destroying bad bacteria, digesting your food and assisting in the absorption of nutrients. They welcome healthful nutrients while waving away any harmful viruses or bugs. They readily provide up to 70% of your immune system.

Stress, poor diet and the use of antibiotics can adversely affect the delicate balance of your intestines and wreak havoc on your immune system.

You can influence the composition of the bacteria in your gut by cutting out refined sugars, eating fermented vegetables, and supplementing with a high quality probiotic supplement.

Another way to help keep your intestinal flora happy is by adding prebiotic foods to your diet. Prebiotics feed probiotics. The top prebiotic foods include raw chicory root, raw Jerusalem artichoke, raw dandelion greens, raw garlic, raw leeks, raw and cooked onion, raw asparagus, raw jicama and raw bananas.

Gut on Fire!

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

The sensation of having your gut on fire is no laughing matter. The pain, discomfort, fatigue and stress that stomach burning may cause can make daily life miserable. Unfortunately, gut on fire is an all too common problem due to indigestible, inorganic foods, over use of antibiotics, chlorinated water and the like.

You may not experience a lot of the symptoms in the early stages, yet the inflammation can lead to disorders including autoimmune conditions.

What is gut on fire?

Your small bowel is full of live organisms. There is a constant balancing act at work in your gut. If it becomes extremely unbalanced, your gut can become inflamed and/or you can develop what is called leaky gut as a result of eating foods that are hard for you to digest.

For example, if you have sensitivity to gluten and eat a meal containing bread or pasta, these foods can be your trigger. Painful gas and inflammation develop and your stomach churns, taking the nutrients in your food and sending them out of your body before they are properly digested.

After a time, tiny tears can occur in your intestines that cause proteins to leak into your bloodstream, potentially leading to colitis, diverticulitis, edema and bloating.

Many people have what may look like a fat or distended tummy which turns out to not be fat at all, but rather gas and inflammation.

Gut on fire can also cause fuzzy brain, poor memory, dizziness and forgetfulness.

It’s very important to keep your tummy happy!  Live probiotics can balance the organisms naturally occurring in your gut.  Don’t be deceived by commercial yogurts advertising that they contain live probiotics, while at the same time they are loaded with sugars that render them virtually useless to your system. Your body needs pure, live probiotics to repopulate your gut and relieve that gassy, burning sensation.

Belching, Bloating & Gas: Six Simple Tips for Avoiding Them

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

In some countries, belching after dinner is considered the polite way of thanking your host for a great meal. But here in the USA, belching and cousins bloating and gas are considered digestive issues that cause discomfort we can all live without. Plus, over 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract, which makes healthy digestion a key element in your overall wellness.

Here are six simple steps you can take to insure better digestion.

Chew your food.  Chewing your food well allows your saliva to start breaking down the food for smoother digestion.  Eat slowly and deliberately.

Handle stress.  When you’re stressed, the fight-or-flight reaction begins and digestion slows.  Your body shuts down blood flow, which affects digestive muscles.  Take time to relax, breathe deeply, and let go of the stresses in your life.

Get regular exercise.  When you exercise, you support the muscles of your intestines, which maintain regularity.  Exercise also helps to reduce stress, supporting healthy digestion.

Take supplements.  I can recommend supplements targeted to your personal needs.  From enzymes to probiotics, we have a full range of food-based nutritional products to support your digestive health.  See our July digestive specials below.

Stay hydrated.  Drinking pure, fresh water supports regularity and the health of the digestive system. Avoid sodas as they contain unhealthy sugars such as high fructose corn syrup or artificial sugar substitutes.  And, the carbonation can cause gas. Limit caffeinated beverages and eliminate alcohol.

Eat more fiber.  Eat a well-balanced diet, and avoid processed foods, sugars and highly refined carbohydrates.  Fiber-rich foods are excellent for digestion. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and limit grains and high-fat meats.

Irritable Bowel and Chiropractic

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Do you bloat after eating? Do you have constipation and/or diarrhea? Do you have a lot of gas? Are you uncomfortable in your bowels?  If so, you are one of millions of Americans who suffer from digestive issues. Many just ignore the problem, but the remedy may be easier than you think.

Dr. Robert Maigne, a French physician and manipulative practitioner, wrote a book entitled Diagnosis and Treatment of Pain of Vertebral Origin. He refers to misalignments in the lower midback causing low back pain, hip pain, groin pain and pelvic complaints including irritable bowel syndrome or disorder, urinary symptoms and intestinal problems.

He studied irritable bowel syndrome and found that issues with the spine in the lower midback region can cause irritable bowel syndrome and other problems in the lower abdomen such as urinary problems. When treated medically, the results were not successful.

When the nerves of the spine are pinched as a result of spinal dysfunction, the nerves go from working at 100% to working at 40% or less. As a result, the brain, which uses the nerves to communicate to all parts of the body, cannot communicate properly because the nerve is no longer doing its job of carrying messages. The brain, therefore, cannot control the body part supplied by that nerve and that body part cannot work correctly or coordinate with the rest of the body. A disease process can now occur.

Back pain may not be present, so you may not think that your spine has anything to do with your organ (bowel, bladder and such) problem. But as it turns out, what was always present was spinal dysfunction in the lower part of the midback.

Traditional medical treatment of bowel problems is usually medication and, if severe, part of the bowel is surgically removed. As a non-drug practitioner, we look for solutions to heal the bowel so the problem is resolved, not covered up or cut up.

Through standard chiropractic care as well as our nutritional program, called Nutrition Deficiency Testing (NDT), we can find what will heal your bowel so you will have a healthy digestive system. When your digestive system works well, you feel and look better.

Ask about our NDT program for irritable bowel and start feeling good again!

July is Digestion Awareness Month…and we have specials! Do you know how important digestion is for your overall health?  During the month of July, we will also have several digestive products on sale for 20% off from Standard Process, a wonderful line of nutritional supplements available only through doctors that I highly recommend.
