PMS – A Natural Approach

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Ahhhh those pesky hormones! How many ways can we be affected by them when they go astray?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) often occurs when the hormones are not in balance. Symptoms may include acne, swollen breasts, bloating, mood swings, sleep disturbances, headache, backache, appetite changes, aches and pains, irritability, anxiety and probably a few more unpleasant things. Many women experience such symptoms a week or so before their menstrual cycle.

I do not believe that we were designed to suffer. When we do suffer, there may be natural ways to get things back into balance so the body can heal and regulate itself. There are lifestyle habits one should develop that will help get the hormones balanced, including:

  • Exercise two and a half hours a week
  • Avoid salt, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and chemicals in food
  • Get eight hours sleep each night (yes, you can do it!)
  • Eat lots of vegetables and some fruits

Acupuncture can also help with some of the symptoms of PMS. We have an excellent acupuncturist on staff here in our center.

There are various vitamins and supplements that can help with PMS symptoms including calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, black cohosh, chasteberry, evening primrose oil, and more.

But how do you know which ones to take and when?

You could experiment for a few years trying to find the right combination…or you can make an appointment with me for Nutrition Deficiency Testing so we can find the organs of the body that need support so you can heal yourself.

Give your body what it needs and wants so you can feel great again!

So What Is Up With My Thyroid?

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Let’s talk about the thyroid. The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck below the Adam’s apple. It produces hormones that regulate how fast we burn food (metabolism), and it helps to regulate body temperature, body energy, use of other hormones and growth and development of body tissues.

What can go wrong with the thyroid?  The gland can produce too much or too little hormone, an issue that is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms of thyroid overproduction include:

  • Weight loss even if eating more
  • Increased heart rate
  • More frequent bowel movements
  • Muscle weakness, trembling hands
  • Goiter (enlarged gland)
  • Change in menstrual cycles

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:

  • Tiredness, mental slowness, depression
  • Slow heart rate
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Tingling or numbness in hands
  • Goiter
  • Constipation, heavy menstrual periods
  • Dry skin
  • Dry, thinning hair; loss of outer eyebrows
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Decreased circulation to the skin resulting in dry, coarse skin on extremities
  • Redness over front of neck-lines in front of neck prominent

Children can also experience thyroid problems. Symptoms include being tired, poor growth, delayed tooth development, decreased sexual development, poor school performance, behavioral problems, anxiety and being too active. Infants can be overly tired and constipated.

Lab tests which can tell us which type of thyroid problem you may have include CBC, CMP, TSH total and free T4, T3, Reverse T3, T3 uptake, TPO antibody and TGB antibody. Muscle testing can identify subclinical cases.

But if you are negative for any thyroid issue, there are other reasons for feeling tired all the time. The main possibility is adrenal fatigue, which is caused by physical and emotional stress. An overload occurs in the body and chemicals are released into your system. This wears out adrenals, often resulting in poor sleep, anxiety, depression, nervousness, dizziness when stand up, faintness, fatigue and not enough energy.

Physical stressors include travel, injuries, toxins, lack of sleep, bad diet and an unhealthy nervous system.

Emotional stressors include losses, threats, and toxic people.

What can you do to help your healing abilities? You can ignite the body’s healing spark!

First we start with Nutrition Deficiency Testing so we can find out exactly what your individual body requires for healing. Treatment is natural supplements that heal the organs. Testing removes all the confusion!  We don’t try to find good health in a pill, but rather by supporting the body with nutrients that it needs and wants.

Chiropractic care allows your organs to heal through improving the health of your nervous system, so if this is part of your health problem, we can help you here as well.

My goal is to help you get and stay well and feeling great!

Are You Doomed When You Hear “You Have Diabetes?”

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult onset diabetes as it usually occurred after 20 years of age. Unfortunately, this type of diabetes is occurring at younger and younger ages.

This type of diabetes begins with the body becoming less able to use insulin. Insulin is a hormone made in your pancreas, an organ that sits below your stomach which produces enzymes that digest starches as well as insulin. Insulin allows sugars to enter your cells so it can be used for energy.

The pancreas is triggered to produce more insulin for the cells but eventually it cannot keep up and it fatigues. When this happens, the sugar in your blood builds up and makes the body sick. Unless one lowers their blood sugar they are at risk for many health problems such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and more.

Traditional medical treatment is medication. Medication lowers your blood sugar but does not cause the pancreas to heal.

The body has an inborn desire to heal and will work very hard to repair itself. My interest is: why did the pancreas weaken in the first place, and can we help it to heal?

Lifestyle is the biggest reason for pancreatic overload and pancreatic weakness. Yes, some people are born from a genetic tree that has type 2 diabetes. But, not everyone with diabetes in their family ends up with diabetes.

It may be possible to turn a gene off or never trigger it to turn on in the first place. More and more studies are showing the effect of our lifestyle choices on our genes.

Diet is a huge factor in how our bodies work and if they survive well. Eating foods that turn into sugar easily stress our pancreas.

If you want to know what to avoid and what is better for you in terms of sugars, get yourself a Glycemic Index food list. Things like puffed rice cakes, cereals, breads, pasta all convert quickly to sugar. Potatoes, peas, corn, beans and some fruit also convert quickly.

Fruit juices are as bad as sodas in terms of sugar. Prepared foods, snack foods and fast foods generally have lots of sugars and starches that also convert to sugar.

Adding protein and fat to your starchy foods slows down their conversion to sugar. Eating lots of vegetables makes your body stronger.

When you eat correctly you do not overwork your pancreas. You can start now to eat properly to help your pancreas heal.

I have found that once a person has been diagnosed, we have to take immediate measures to help the pancreas. We have several total food supplements that nourish the pancreas so it can rest and heal. It’s like a sick animal-if you let it rest, feed it the right things and stop doing things that harm it, it will heal.

Through natural means the pancreas can work better so that you do not end up becoming another statistic.

Specials for women only during the month of August…We have several products on 20% off sale in celebration of Women’s Health Month. What to Do About Osteoporosis

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

August is Women’s Health Month, so I thought I would start off by talking about osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a common bone condition that makes bones thinner and more fragile. It puts people at risk of fractures, especially of the hip, spinal vertebrae and wrist. Osteoporosis is most common in women, but it also affects men as well.

There are simple things you can do that can help build up your bones and lower your risk of osteoporosis.

Calcium-rich foods that will help build up your bones include dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, sardines and salmon with the bones in, tuna, broccoli and almonds. Calcium pills are not well absorbed and need to be taken in an acid environment. We can help you find the right calcium for you so that you absorb it well. Protein is very important for bone health, especially lean poultry and fish, nuts and seeds, dry beans and eggs.

Foods that leach calcium from your bones are many. Salty foods – from processed meats to canned soups, fast food and packaged baked goods – are all loaded with salt and cause the loss of calcium.  Also, caffeine, and sodas – including carbonated waters and club soda — should be limited or avoided.

But if you already have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, we have a real-food nutritional product available that is so powerful, it’s actually classified as a medical food. Medical foods are foods developed in such a way that they treat a medical condition. Based on studies, they are approved by the FDA.

Osteoben ™ has been approved to treat osteoporosis/osteopenia. It is plant based and helps bones become stronger without serious side effects. It also reduces hot flashes in menopausal women (exciting for those of you with hot flashes) and reduces some predictors of unhealthy heart risks.

Because Osteoben is not a drug but rather a medical food, no prescription is necessary.  If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis or have a family history of osteoporosis, this product may be right for you. Call our office for more information, stop by, or let’s talk about it during your next appointment.

Specials for women only during the month of August…We have several products on 20% off sale in celebration of Women’s Health Month. They are Osteoben™ (osteoporosis), Symplex F (supports the healthy function of the ovaries and the adrenal, pituitary and thyroid glands), Evening Primrose Oil (hormone balance), Adrenal Support (emotional balance) and Thyroid Support (thyroid). Until next time…
