Eat More Fish for a Healthy Heart

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Here’s another National Heart Health Month challenge. Join me in pledging to eat more fish for a healthy heart!

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine offers good evidence that eating several servings of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids each week may reduce the risk of heart disease and death. The study was conducted by researchers from Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston, and it compared 94 men who died suddenly from heart disease with 184 healthy men.

They discovered that men without heart disease were 81 percent less likely to experience sudden death if they had high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood, regardless of other risk factors such as age or smoking habits.

Found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and trout, omega-3 fatty acids are believed to lower the risk of developing an irregular heart rhythm and to reduce blood cholesterol and clotting.  More and more studies are finding there is a reverse association between fish intake and heart disease in women and men.

You also need to weigh the value of purchasing wild caught over farmed fish.

Farmed fish are typically raised in tight, dark quarters, hence the need to feed farmed salmon food coloring to give them the red color we expect. Read any farmed salmon package and you will see food coloring on the label. As if that isn’t bad enough, farmed fish are most often fed GMO-laden gruel that includes antibiotics to keep them from getting sick in these unnatural conditions.

Wild caught fish are natural and contain all the nutrients nature intended.

Fish oil supplements can be an effective option, but be sure to choose a reputable brand that promises fish oil from pristine waters that is tested for purity and strength.

An Avocado a Day May Help Keep Heart Disease Away

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

February is National Heart Health Month. Join me in making one healthy change per week that can lead toward preventing heart disease. Here’s a healthy and delicious suggestion you might want to try.

Avocados. For years, this nutritious green fruit (yes, they are a fruit, not a vegetable) has been avoided by many due to its high-fat content.  According to a study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, eating one avocado a day as part of a heart healthy, cholesterol-lowering moderate-fat diet can help improve bad cholesterol levels.

Researchers evaluated the effect avocados had on cardiovascular risk factors by replacing saturated fatty acids from an average American diet with unsaturated fatty acids from avocados. In other words, avocado fat is healthy fat, and the luscious green fruit is also one of the best natural sources of potassium.

Perhaps you are accustomed to eating avocados only in the form of guacamole, which pairs the fruit with chips that are usually fried and high in sodium.

A healthier way to enjoy an avocado is in a green salad, on a sandwich with low-fat protein and high fiber bread, with a vegetable dish, with lean protein foods like chicken or fish, or just sliced in half and scooped out with a spoon.

Back Pain and Mental Health

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

An article in Medical News Today discussed a study of almost 200,000 participants. It was found that individuals who have back pain are more likely to experience a range of mental health conditions. Back pain and mental health problems?

Back pain is the leading cause of disability around the world. According to the Global Burden of Disease study, lower back pain affects almost one in 10 people. Back pain reduces the quality of life and increases the risk of other health problems. And mental health is just one of them.

Back pain is the most common issue I hear about from my patients.

You don’t have to live with pain and discomfort. I have many natural ways to not only alleviate that pain but to also heal the problem that is causing the pain.

Give us a call and come in for an evaluation so that we can start on a course of treatment that will get you out of pain and your back in tip top condition.

You’ll be glad you did!
