Childrens Health

What is the Benefit of Chiropractic for Kids?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Over the past few decades parents, clinicians, and researchers have noticed positive changes in the behavioral, physical, and emotional health of children under chiropractic care. Many different behavioral conditions have been observed to improve with chiropractic care including ADD/ADHD, anxiety, and also focus, concentration, and grades in school.

Since the nerves collectively control and influence all bodily functions, removing nerve interference may result in improvement of many different health problems depending on the area of the spine and nervous system involved. Improvement is commonly seen in conditions such as colic, constipation, ear infections, allergies, asthma, sinus infections, persistent bed wetting, stomach aches, “growing pains” in the legs or arms, headaches, back and neck pain, scoliosis, and abnormal gait among others.

How can your child’s body lose its natural alignment and develop subluxations? Subluxation means: sub: less than and luxation: misalignment. So the word means less than a dislocation or a minor dislocation. If your nervous system is interfered with, your body’s natural ability to heal itself and function at its optimum potential becomes impaired.

Studies have shown that in the majority of cases, trauma from the birthing process or procedures causes subluxation of the infant’s spine. Subluxation damage can be caused by a constricted uterus, a breech presentation or a difficult delivery, and in cases of vacuum extraction or excessive force, the spine is always traumatized. Health problems in childhood or even adulthood have been traced back to spinal and structural damage at birth in many cases.

Research is confirming chiropractors’ observations that infants may suffer from spinal subluxations. In one study, 1250 babies were examined five days after birth; 211 of them suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity, and sleeplessness. Subluxations were found in 95% of this group. Although the researchers in this study were MDs, they recognized the power of chiropractic care and these babies were given the care they needed.

Toddlerhood through childhood is a very physical time. Those first hesitant steps soon evolve into jumping, running, falls and accidents which are all part of a normal childhood. While most falls are minor, at times they can cause nerve-damaging subluxations with serious long-term consequences. For that reason, all children need periodic spinal check-ups.

Why Give Your Kids Regular Chiropractic Care?

The best reason to do any health related activity is for wellness and prevention. And it is easier to grow healthy children than to repair damaged adults. Life is so much better when your children never seem to get sick or have health problems than when you are routinely going from appointment to appointment treating the symptoms of ill health. It is not unusual to hear parents state that since starting chiropractic care their children get sick less frequently and less severely, have fewer ear infections, and take fewer antibiotics and other drugs than their classmates.

Good health is a priceless gift. Be sure to share it with your family and friends.

Can Supplements Help Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

As we discussed last week, autism is a disorder that involves abnormal development and function of the brain. People with autism show decreased social communication skills and restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviors or interests. One in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1 in 88 two years ago, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Boys are affected by ASD more often than girls.

More and more studies are focusing on nutritional supplements and their affect on ASD. Here are a few key nutrients that have shown to be helpful:

  • Curcumin: Oxidation and inflammation play major roles in ASD. Curcumin is the component in turmeric with remarkable anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also helpful in relieving gastrointestinal issues that often accompany ASD.
  • Glutathione: This master antioxidant is found in every cell in our bodies. Recent studies show that children with ASD suffer from glutathione deficiencies and a reduced ability to convert oxidized glutathione back into its active form. Researchers in Arkansas found glutathione levels in the brains of children with ASD to be up to 52% lower than normal levels.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are concentrated in the brain and play a major role in its development. Researchers have found that children with ASD often have low omega-3 levels. A recent study in California indicated that after 12 weeks, children with ASD in the omega-3 given group had improved hyperactivity scores.
  • Probiotics:  Researchers frequently connect gut health with brain function. Clinical research published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders examined how gastrointestinal disorders affect children with ASD.  These children showed more anxiety, irritability and social withdrawal than children with ASD and no gastrointestinal issues.

Perhaps the biggest issues with any kind of supplementation are not just what supplements to take, but in what form, what brand, how much to take and how often to take it. Also, how long will you have to take the supplement before seeing some kind of results?

We have a non-invasive testing method, Vitamin Deficiency Testing, where we can quickly see which nutrients you or a loved one require for optimum health as well as how much is required. Call our office to schedule an appointment.

Until next time…

Does Autism Spectrum Disorder Start in the Womb?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Autism is a disorder that involves abnormal development and function of the brain.

While the cause of ASD is unknown, it is plausible that environmental toxins and nutritional deficiencies could lead to the damage of our nervous systems. Heavy metals, for instance, are known to be neurotoxic (damage nerve tissue).

Recent research indicates that ASD may begin in the womb. Prudent health researchers and preventative health practitioners agree that avoidance of toxins will do nothing but good for you and your gestating child.

Here’s a suggested list of items to avoid during pregnancy and keep away from your growing child once they are born:

  • Avoid using chemical pesticides and herbicides in your home and backyard.
  • Don’t smoke and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • Avoid any products containing aluminum, including cookware, cans and yes, most personal deodorants. Look for deodorants that are aluminum free.
  • Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating and go organic whenever possible.
  • Avoid canned foods, which can absorb BPA from the can linings.
  • Use glass containers instead of plastic to store and heat food.
  • Use natural skin care products without artificial ingredients and chemical fragrances.
  • Use natural cleaning products in your home.
  • Avoid antibacterial soap and toothpaste containing triclosan.
  • Avoid chemical fumes, especially paint fumes.  Let someone else paint the nursery.

Until next time…

So What Is Up With My Thyroid?

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Let’s talk about the thyroid. The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck below the Adam’s apple. It produces hormones that regulate how fast we burn food (metabolism), and it helps to regulate body temperature, body energy, use of other hormones and growth and development of body tissues.

What can go wrong with the thyroid?  The gland can produce too much or too little hormone, an issue that is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms of thyroid overproduction include:

  • Weight loss even if eating more
  • Increased heart rate
  • More frequent bowel movements
  • Muscle weakness, trembling hands
  • Goiter (enlarged gland)
  • Change in menstrual cycles

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:

  • Tiredness, mental slowness, depression
  • Slow heart rate
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Tingling or numbness in hands
  • Goiter
  • Constipation, heavy menstrual periods
  • Dry skin
  • Dry, thinning hair; loss of outer eyebrows
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Decreased circulation to the skin resulting in dry, coarse skin on extremities
  • Redness over front of neck-lines in front of neck prominent

Children can also experience thyroid problems. Symptoms include being tired, poor growth, delayed tooth development, decreased sexual development, poor school performance, behavioral problems, anxiety and being too active. Infants can be overly tired and constipated.

Lab tests which can tell us which type of thyroid problem you may have include CBC, CMP, TSH total and free T4, T3, Reverse T3, T3 uptake, TPO antibody and TGB antibody. Muscle testing can identify subclinical cases.

But if you are negative for any thyroid issue, there are other reasons for feeling tired all the time. The main possibility is adrenal fatigue, which is caused by physical and emotional stress. An overload occurs in the body and chemicals are released into your system. This wears out adrenals, often resulting in poor sleep, anxiety, depression, nervousness, dizziness when stand up, faintness, fatigue and not enough energy.

Physical stressors include travel, injuries, toxins, lack of sleep, bad diet and an unhealthy nervous system.

Emotional stressors include losses, threats, and toxic people.

What can you do to help your healing abilities? You can ignite the body’s healing spark!

First we start with Nutrition Deficiency Testing so we can find out exactly what your individual body requires for healing. Treatment is natural supplements that heal the organs. Testing removes all the confusion!  We don’t try to find good health in a pill, but rather by supporting the body with nutrients that it needs and wants.

Chiropractic care allows your organs to heal through improving the health of your nervous system, so if this is part of your health problem, we can help you here as well.

My goal is to help you get and stay well and feeling great!

Who Knew? There are Health Benefits to Being Generous!

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Forget about Black Friday and Cyber Monday…I choose to celebrate Giving Tuesday! Studies have shown that being a generous person can lead to better health.

It may lower blood pressure. Helping out friends and family could be one way to boost your cardiovascular health this holiday season. One study found that people who supported others had lower blood pressure. Why not bring a homemade meal to a friend who’s caring for someone else this holiday season? Help a charity or someone you know.

It can help reduce stress. A recent study found that stingy behavior increases stress. Researchers asked 156 volunteers to play a bargaining game and decide how to divide a sum of money. Using heart rate monitors, they found players who made low offers (below 40% of the total) experienced increased heart rate and stress levels compared to those who made high offers. The moral? Give some away.

It could help you live longer. Lending a hand for small tasks may end up boosting your longevity. In a 2013 study of 846 people who helped others by running errands or doing chores seemed to be protected from the negative impact of stress. People who didn’t help others had a 30% higher risk of dying during the study if they reported having a stressful life event. If a member of your family always cooks the holiday dinner, it might not be a bad idea to pitch in this year with the meal.

It can boost your mood. Research shows that giving money away can feel just as good as receiving it. For a 2007 study in Science, researchers used brain imaging technology on 19 women to see how certain regions were activated when they either kept $100 or gave it to a local food bank. Turns out the same pleasure-related centers in the brain that lit up in those who took the money also went off in those who donated the money—even more so when the decision was voluntary and not required by researchers. Whether you drop some change into a charity bucket or send a larger sum to your favorite nonprofit, you can’t go wrong this holiday season with a little giving.

And here’s some more news you can use…

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

On Saturday, December 12, from 9:00 am – 12 noon, it’s Kid’s Day at Thorburn Chiropractic & Wellness Center!  We will be offering FREE Chiropractic exams for children from infant up to the age of 12.  We request that parents accompanying their children to Kid’s Day bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Marine’s annual Toys for Tots campaign.

Many people mistakenly think the only reason to visit a doctor of Chiropractic is for a bad back, but as millions of parents know, Chiropractic care has many benefits for children. Chiropractic care can help to heal common problems such as ear infections, colic, colds, fevers, sore throats, bed-wetting, asthma and allergies. Chiropractic care is effective in treating many learning and behavioral problems, and promotes general wellness and prevention.

We offer the gift of good health to your child, and we encourage you to bring a holiday gift for a child in need.  Please call our office to make an appointment, and feel free to share this with your friends and family.

Our November monthly special is 20% off our complete line of digestive products, including Enzycore, Multizyme and Zypan.   Since digestive challenges can center around enzyme imbalances, adding additional enzymes through whole food supplements can assist the body’s digestion and contribute to overall good health.  Stay healthy and feel great throughout the holiday season with a well-balanced digestive tract!

And a reminder about Thanksgiving week hours…  Book your Thanksgiving week appointments early!  We will be open Monday, November 23 and Wednesday, November 25 from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, closed for lunch from 1:30 – 3:00 pm both days.  We will be closed Friday, November 27 and Saturday, November 28 so that our staff can spend the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with their friends and family.

Forced Vaccination Bill Now in CA Assembly

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. T:

Back in March I forwarded you some information on this important bill before the California Assembly, and now the bill is being fast tracked. My concern is that if this passes, who owns you and your family’s bodies? This is more than just a health issue — it is a human rights issue. How far could such legislation reach?

People think-oh it can’t be so bad. It’s for everyone’s health, right? Look throughout history at what happens when men lose a freedom. Please read information from the National Vaccination Information Center (NVIC) below and act if you agree with me that our basic freedoms are being challenged.

ALERT: California Assembly Fast Tracking Forced Vaccination Bill

The California Assembly is fast tracking SB 277, a bill to eliminate all non-medical vaccine exemptions for religious and conscientious beliefs from the mandatory vaccination law governing school attendance. Although there were public hearings in the Health, Education and Judiciary committees in the state Senate, the bill has only been referred to the Health Committee and a hearing could be scheduled as early as the beginning of next week (June 8-12, 2015.)

With no scheduled public hearings in the Education or Appropriations committees, SB 277 will not be reviewed in the Assembly for civil rights violations and financial impact. It looks like the skids are being greased by pharmaceutical, medical trade and government lobbyists pressuring legislators to bring the bill to a fast floor vote and send it to Governor Brown for his signature.

California Parents – This May Be Your Last Chance to Act

If you live in California and are the parent of a child who attends daycare, public or private school, you may only have one more week left to contact your Assembly member and tell the person you elected to represent you what you think about SB 277.

Download a handout here that lists five good reasons why SB 277 should not become law. Give it to your Assembly member so he or she understands why:

• SB 277 is not based on scientific evidence or compelling state interest;
• SB 277 is a violation of parental and human rights;
• SB 277 requires children to risk vaccine injury, while vaccine manufacturers and doctors administering vaccines are shielded from vaccine injury liability;
• SB 277 discriminates against children to deny them a school-based education guaranteed by the California Constitution; and
• SB 277 will be excessively expensive to administer and enforce.

You can track SB277 and immediately contact your Assembly member on your cell phone, tablet or computer by becoming a user of the free NVIC Advocacy Portal.

If the bill is voted out of the Assembly Health Committee and then quickly approved by the full Assembly and signed by the Governor, your only options will be to (1) find a doctor to write an almost impossible-to-get medical vaccine exemption for your child or (2) home school or enroll your child in an independent study program.

There is No Public Health Emergency in California

Unvaccinated school aged children with religious and conscientious belief exemptions are not causing measles and whooping cough outbreaks in California. Out of 136 measles cases reported in the state in 2015, only 18 percent were in school-aged children while 55% were in adults and 30 percent of all cases with vaccine records had been vaccinated. In 2014, out of 8,200 pediatric pertussis cases with vaccination records reported in California, 90 percent had been vaccinated.

The 2015 California measles outbreak associated with Disneyland only affected 0.00035% of the state’s population and was successfully contained without eliminating non-medical vaccine exemptions.

Special Needs Children Being Discriminated Against

Many parents testified in California Senate public hearings that they have vaccine-injured children or have children with brain and immune system problems that could make them especially susceptible to vaccine harm but are unable to find a doctor willing to write a medical vaccine exemption. Those parents depend upon the personal belief vaccine exemption for their special needs children to be educated in public and private schools under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Free Appropriate Public Education Act (FAPE).

Potential Criminal Prosecution and Prison Time for Non-Complying Parents

The bill’s primary sponsors, pediatrician Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) and Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) have not publicly explained what will happen if parents refuse to give their school aged child every federally recommended vaccine required by state health officials now or in the future under SB 277. However, if non-complying parents cannot provide their child with a home-based education for financial or other reasons and the children are barred from attending school, truancy laws in California and other states can and do subject parents to costly criminal prosecution and imprisonment.

Californians – participate in our democracy and ACT NOW to protect your vaccine informed consent rights. There is no substitute for one-on-one personal contact with your own Assembly member.

Until next time…
