Top Foods for Healthy Kidneys

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Do you have problems with your kidneys such as infections or kidney stones? The kidneys are two of the very important organs in the body. They prevent the buildup of wastes and extra fluid in the body and they keep levels of electrolytes stable, such as sodium, potassium, and phosphate. They make hormones that help regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells, and help bones stay strong. Diet and nutrition can play a major role in making sure you have healthy kidneys.

Fresh foods are best, so nix foods that are prepared or packaged. A kidney-friendly diet is one in which protein, phosphorus, and sodium levels are limited. While the body needs protein for muscle growth and tissue repair, people with kidney problems often cannot rid their bodies of the waste created when the body uses protein.

Here are some foods to include in your diet that will contribute to good kidney health: red bell pepper, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, red grapes, egg whites, fish high in omega-3’s (wild salmon, herring, mackerel, rainbow trout), and extra virgin olive oil.

Does this list of foods sound familiar?  Yes, they are all heart-healthy foods as well. The heart and the kidneys work closely together so it’s no surprise that the same super foods will help keep them both in tip-top condition.

Having issues with your kidneys?  In addition to making good dietary choices, whole food supplements can assist your body in the healing process and many times speed up the process.

We have a full line of whole food supplements that I’ve been successfully using with my patients for many years. In order to assess what nutrients your body is lacking, we will need to do a non-invasive form of testing, Nutrition Deficiency Testing, which is on sale now through the end of March. See complete information below and give us a call and come in so we can assess your condition and get you started on the road to wellness.

Nutrition Deficiency Testing on sale – our March special! From now through the end of March, we are offering a deep discount on your first Nutrition Deficiency Testing appointment.  The first appointment is regularly priced at $120, but through March 2017 it’s only $59! Take advantage of the savings and get to the root of your chronic problem. Today is the day to start getting healthy!

Until next time…

Eat More Fish for a Healthy Heart

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Here’s another National Heart Health Month challenge. Join me in pledging to eat more fish for a healthy heart!

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine offers good evidence that eating several servings of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids each week may reduce the risk of heart disease and death. The study was conducted by researchers from Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston, and it compared 94 men who died suddenly from heart disease with 184 healthy men.

They discovered that men without heart disease were 81 percent less likely to experience sudden death if they had high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood, regardless of other risk factors such as age or smoking habits.

Found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and trout, omega-3 fatty acids are believed to lower the risk of developing an irregular heart rhythm and to reduce blood cholesterol and clotting.  More and more studies are finding there is a reverse association between fish intake and heart disease in women and men.

You also need to weigh the value of purchasing wild caught over farmed fish.

Farmed fish are typically raised in tight, dark quarters, hence the need to feed farmed salmon food coloring to give them the red color we expect. Read any farmed salmon package and you will see food coloring on the label. As if that isn’t bad enough, farmed fish are most often fed GMO-laden gruel that includes antibiotics to keep them from getting sick in these unnatural conditions.

Wild caught fish are natural and contain all the nutrients nature intended.

Fish oil supplements can be an effective option, but be sure to choose a reputable brand that promises fish oil from pristine waters that is tested for purity and strength.

I Eat Healthy, So I’m OK….

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

You think because you eat a healthy diet, you are OK. On any given day, you basically feel pretty good. You exercise a few times a week, drink a good amount of water each day, and limit sugar and alcohol consumption. And you even quit smoking a few years ago so…life is fine.

But think again. With today’s nutritionally-depleted food supply and a 1500-2500 calorie a day diet, there is no way you can get the nutrients you need, even if your food is 100 percent organic. And if you eat out in restaurants at all – and who doesn’t – the food might be yummy but you just don’t know what quality of nutrients you are getting.

And then there are GMOs – Genetically Modified Organisms. GMOs are found in up to 80% of the food sold in American supermarkets. GMOs are the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The reason for these lab-created hybrids is to make it easier for farmers to control weeds and pests and to produce a larger yield in less time. As for their long-term effect on human health, no one is certain.

So, what is your body lacking?  What supplements should you take?  And how much? What can you do to make sure you stay healthy and feeling great well into your senior years?

We have two simple ways to test your body and find out exactly what you are missing.

Nutrition Deficiency Testing (NDT) is a non-invasive means of testing the body to determine the underlying causes of health issues. When these are corrected through safe nutritional means, the body often can repair and rebuild itself.

We are now also offering Science Based Nutrition lab work, including hair analysis, to help determine your nutritional needs. Combining this with NDT gives you the best chance to heal and save money by taking only the supplements you really need.

At Thorburn Chiropractic and Wellness Center, we have a full line of whole food supplements that we highly recommend.  Call our office to make your first appointment for NDT and Science Based Nutrition lab work and get started on a healthier you!

Through January 31, 2017, enjoy a healthy discount on some of our premier detox programs! Detoxing isn’t the same as fasting.  During a detox, you replace unhealthy food and drink with nutritious ones that have a cleansing and healing effect on certain conditions. With all of these programs, you will be enjoying delicious, healthy foods, whole food shakes, and taking whole food supplements.

The third is our Inflammation 10-Day Program, regularly $146, now just $117. Inflammation can be obvious when you have pain. Or perhaps you have been told that you have an inflammatory condition. Inflammation can be the source of fatigue, skin problems, joint stiffness, dark circles under the eyes, sinus congestion, irregular bowel, bloating, and water retention.

What Vaccinations Do You Really Need?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Vaccination is one of the most controversial health issues of our time. Last year, the state of California passed Senate Bill 277 requiring all children who attend public or private schools in the state to be fully vaccinated. We are constantly reminded to get a flu shot, a pneumonia shot, a shingles vaccination, etc.

A new online documentary series, Vaccines Revealed, features leading medical experts weighing in on all types of vaccinations and where they stand on whether or not they are necessary for any or all of us.

This exclusive documentary series is about to be unveiled for free viewing beginning this week —  January 10th – 18th. You’ll discover the most cutting-edge news and just released evidence from over twenty of the world’s authorities and experts.

You owe it to yourself to make informed choices about your personal healthcare.  To view the series, visit http://www.vaccinesrevealed.com/landingii/.

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Thanksgiving is just around the corner – next Thursday to be exact – and I wanted to share a light, delicious gluten-free, dairy-free dessert recipe.

Pumpkin Souffle
4 eggs, whites and yolks separated
1 cup roasted fresh pumpkin or canned pumpkin
¼ cup pure maple syrup or sweetener of choice
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
pumpkin pie seasoning to taste
2 teaspoons coconut oil for greasing

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whip egg whites only until peaks form. Mix together the yolks, pumpkin, maple syrup, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice until well blended. Once peaks form with the egg whites, gently incorporate the pumpkin/yolk mixture. It’s very important not to over mix. Fold the combined egg mixture into a well-greased souffle dish, pie dish or small ramekins. Bake until mixture is cooked through and top is golden brown, 20-25 minutes. Serve warm or chilled.

Could SAD Give You Diabetes?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Could the SAD – Standard American Diet – lead to type 2 diabetes?

SAD is characterized by a diet high in meats especially lunch-type meats, milk-based foods (cheese yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) potatoes, prepared foods, fried foods and sweets.

In contrast, a healthy, nutritious diet has high levels of colorful fruits and vegetables, good fats (avocados, olive oil, nuts), limited eggs, poultry and fish, and plenty of pure, fresh water.

So, of course, the SAD diet could — and often does – lead Americans to a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. If you are predisposed to diabetes by family history it is essential that you reduce the sugar load on your body so your pancreas can survive.

Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult-onset diabetes because it was typically seen after the age of forty. Did you know that this disease is being diagnosed in children as young as elementary school age? Our diets and computer lifestyles are creating serious health problems.

You can reduce your risk of developing diabetes by making a few changes on a gradient basis.

  1. Get moving – walking bicycling, swimming – any activity that gets you moving.
  2. Eliminate soda.
  3. Eliminate high-fructose corn syrup.
  4. Get a Glycemic index chart. It tells you what foods convert into high blood sugar easily. Avoid those foods with a high Gylcemic index.
  5. Reduce breads, rice and rice cakes, pasta, sweets, and fruit juice.
  6. Eat five real servings of fresh vegetables daily.
  7. Increase the good fats – olive oil, avocados, and nuts.
  8. Do not eat anything hydrogenated (foods that have been altered to become more solid-margarine, shortening). Read labels.

You do not need to develop this disease and by doing the things that reduce stress on your pancreas you can avoid it. We can check your body for signs of pancreatic stress and help you fight back against this health-robber!

November special…We have an excellent 10-Day Blood Sugar Support Program which can naturally encourage the healing process for the organs involved in processing sugars in the body. This program includes a daily nutrition shake, a gentle cleansing supplement, a supplement that encourages healthy blood sugar metabolism and an herbal product that helps maintain blood sugar balance when combined with a healthy diet. GMOs and the Big Round Up

Posted on

Greetings from Dr.Thorburn:

Whether we like it or not, GMOs are a part of the American dietary landscape and they are something we all need to become more informed about.

According to the Grocery Manufacturers Association, 70-80% of the food we eat in the United States, both at home and away from home, contain GMO ingredients.  A GMO is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans.

The top ten most common GMO foods are soy, corn, canola oil, cotton (cottonseed oil), milk (cows are given hormones to develop and produce milk faster), sugar, aspartame, zucchini, yellow squash and papaya.

Most fresh produce, with the exception of those listed above, are non-GMO. Dried beans, grains, nuts and seeds are non-GMO. Meats, unless they are organically raised, have been fed GMO corn.

The easiest way to avoid GMOs is to buy food – especially any packaged food — that is 100% organic. Every day more and more foods proclaim on their labels and in their advertising that they are non-GMO. Non-GMO is desirable.  Food the way nature made it.  It’s time to learn more.

Why GMOs? Stock answers from food manufacturers include that science is finding ways to make heartier plants that are better able to withstand weather and come to harvest in less time.  Who could argue feeding more people quicker with the ever growing world population?  It is interesting to note that over half of the 28 European Union countries want nothing to do with GMOs.

A major GMO controversy revolves around Round Up, the herbicide produced by Monsanto. Round Up’s active ingredient is glyphosate, which when consumed has been shown to cause nutritional deficiencies, especially minerals, and system toxicity. The World Health Organization’s cancer authority, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, has determined that glyphosate “is probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Monsanto’s first Round Up ready crops – which means the plants have been engineered to stand up to Round Up exposure so that the herbicide can be used to get rid of accompanying weeds – was soy, introduced in 1996. Current Round Up ready crops include soy, corn, canola, alfalfa, cotton and sorghum with wheat in development.  Round Up ready seeds are sterile, so that farmers can no longer use the best seeds from a previous crop. Each year they must buy new seeds from Monsanto.

The nonprofit Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) was founded in 2003 by bestselling author and GMO expert Jeffrey Smith.  The IRT website (www.responsibletechnology.org) contains valuable information for the consumer.

An interesting article and study on the IRT website indicates that the proliferation of GMO foods and the affect of chemical residue (gylphosate) from Round Up weed killer used in growing these GMO foods may be contributing to the now 18 million Americans with gluten sensitivity.

Despite the protest of consumers across the state, in 2014 California lawmakers rejected the GMO Labeling Bill. Just two years before, Monsanto – makers of Round Up and Round Up ready GMO seeds – spent $46 million to kill Proposition 37, a California ballot initiative that would have mandated GMO labeling.

What can you do to avoid GMO foods?

Keep current on what’s going on with GMOs by signing up for an enewsletter from your choice of informational non-GMO websites.  Cook whole foods at home whenever possible.  And when you go shopping, look for foods that voluntarily label that they are non-GMO.

Until next time…
