Burbank Chiropractor Reminds Us that Men Have Hormones, Too!

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

As a Burbank Chiropractor and R.N. who has spent a lot of hours studying how the human body functions, I can tell you that many men would greatly benefit from knowing more about their hormones.  With all the constant fuss in the media about women’s hormones, it’s time men get their day because you guys have hormones, too!

In fact, men have some of the same hormones as we women. That’s right, men have estrogen and progesterone in their bodies, only in much smaller amounts than women do.

And then there is testosterone.

Testosterone is an androgen hormone produced by the adrenal cortex, the testes in men, and the ovaries in women. It is considered the primary male hormone.

Testosterone stimulates the development of male characteristics such as body hair and muscle growth and is essential in the production of sperm. In women, testosterone plays a role in egg development and ovulation.

Healthy males who have gone through puberty have 20 times the levels of testosterone compared to a healthy female.  Low levels of testosterone in men can cause male infertility, while high testosterone levels in women are associated with female infertility.

Testosterone production may diminish with age, causing the loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, decreased cognitive ability, lethargy, osteoporosis, and loss of muscle mass and strength.

Before you give in and try that little blue pill, give a healthy change of diet a try. Good nutrition can be your best friend. Zinc, vitamin D, and a whole plethora of nutrients available in natural foods can help put the spring back in your step and the zing back in your love life.

Testosterone-boosting foods include honey, cabbage, asparagus, garlic, eggs, bananas, watermelon, ginseng, almonds, oysters, oatmeal, citrus fruits, spinach, grapes, wild salmon, avocado, tuna, pomegranate, and lean beef.

It’s Men’s Health Month… [Who Could Use a Little Help?]

Posted on

June is Men’s Health Month, so it’s time for men to learn more about their bodies and how to stay healthy for life!

Let’s start off the month by talking about….the prostate gland.

The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut. It’s located just below the bladder and it surrounds the urethra, a tube that carries urine and semen out of the body. As part of the male reproductive system, the prostate gland’s main purpose is to secrete a slightly alkaline fluid that forms part of the seminal fluid, a fluid that carries sperm.

According to the nonprofit Men’s Health Network, more than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life. And men, this includes your sex life!

What can you do to have a healthy prostate?

Eating healthy is a great start. Foods that nourish the prostate include wild salmon, walnuts, sesame seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bell peppers, cabbage, onions, and garlic.  Be sure to eat five servings of vegetables a day.

Maintaining a healthy weight and enjoying moderate exercise is good for the prostate and your overall health.

Get to know your body. Do you know what a baseline is? A baseline is what is normal for you. When you establish a baseline, you have something to compare changes to, and it’s easier to share that information with a doctor to determine if you are having an issue.

Natural products for men only during the month of June, Men’s Health Month … Before you consider taking a little blue pill…I encourage you to try natural supplements to increase your sexual vitality.

I recommend a line of natural supplements, available only through doctors, called Standard Process, that feature a number of products which are extremely effective for encouraging healthy prostate and testes function. Are You Doomed When You Hear “You Have Diabetes?”

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult onset diabetes as it usually occurred after 20 years of age. Unfortunately, this type of diabetes is occurring at younger and younger ages.

This type of diabetes begins with the body becoming less able to use insulin. Insulin is a hormone made in your pancreas, an organ that sits below your stomach which produces enzymes that digest starches as well as insulin. Insulin allows sugars to enter your cells so it can be used for energy.

The pancreas is triggered to produce more insulin for the cells but eventually it cannot keep up and it fatigues. When this happens, the sugar in your blood builds up and makes the body sick. Unless one lowers their blood sugar they are at risk for many health problems such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and more.

Traditional medical treatment is medication. Medication lowers your blood sugar but does not cause the pancreas to heal.

The body has an inborn desire to heal and will work very hard to repair itself. My interest is: why did the pancreas weaken in the first place, and can we help it to heal?

Lifestyle is the biggest reason for pancreatic overload and pancreatic weakness. Yes, some people are born from a genetic tree that has type 2 diabetes. But, not everyone with diabetes in their family ends up with diabetes.

It may be possible to turn a gene off or never trigger it to turn on in the first place. More and more studies are showing the effect of our lifestyle choices on our genes.

Diet is a huge factor in how our bodies work and if they survive well. Eating foods that turn into sugar easily stress our pancreas.

If you want to know what to avoid and what is better for you in terms of sugars, get yourself a Glycemic Index food list. Things like puffed rice cakes, cereals, breads, pasta all convert quickly to sugar. Potatoes, peas, corn, beans and some fruit also convert quickly.

Fruit juices are as bad as sodas in terms of sugar. Prepared foods, snack foods and fast foods generally have lots of sugars and starches that also convert to sugar.

Adding protein and fat to your starchy foods slows down their conversion to sugar. Eating lots of vegetables makes your body stronger.

When you eat correctly you do not overwork your pancreas. You can start now to eat properly to help your pancreas heal.

I have found that once a person has been diagnosed, we have to take immediate measures to help the pancreas. We have several total food supplements that nourish the pancreas so it can rest and heal. It’s like a sick animal-if you let it rest, feed it the right things and stop doing things that harm it, it will heal.

Through natural means the pancreas can work better so that you do not end up becoming another statistic.

Specials for women only during the month of August…We have several products on 20% off sale in celebration of Women’s Health Month. They are Osteoben™ (osteoporosis), Symplex F (supports the healthy function of the ovaries and the adrenal, pituitary and thyroid glands), Evening Primrose Oil (hormone balance), Adrenal Support (emotional balance) and Thyroid Support (thyroid). Ask about them at the front desk next time you are in.

Until next time…

Hidden Causes of Low Testosterone

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Testosterone is found in both men and women and it is vital for normal hormone function and libido. There are natural methods of helping the hormone system work normally so that the use of synthetic hormone therapy can often be avoided.

One cause of low testosterone (or Low T as it is sometimes called) is increased estrogen in our water supply. In 2004, researchers found male fish in the Boulder River who developed female sex organs due to too much estrogen in the water. Our water supply is full of medications such as antibiotics, pain relievers, heart drugs, epilepsy drugs, as well as hormones, because our water plants are not designed to remove them. Eighty percent of the streams in 30 states have shown to contain estrogens and chemicals that mimic estrogens.

Low testosterone can be caused by the body not eliminating circulating estrogen. Another cause is high levels of an enzyme which converts testosterone to estrogen.

What solutions are there for low testosterone?

  • Do a healthy, natural detoxification program. We have a dynamite 21-day program that leaves you squeaky clean and feeling great.
  • Eat lots of cruciferous vegetables — broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, Brussels sprouts and kale. Or, take Cruciferous Complete from Standard Process which is available in our office.
  • Proanocyanidins such as grape seed extract and cranberries also help to keep troublesome hormones in check.

So…eat lots of these foods or get them in pill form so you can protect your testosterone levels.

Also, natural products for men only during the month of June, Men’s Health Month … I recommend a line of natural supplements, available only through doctors, called Standard Process that features a number of products which are extremely effective for encouraging healthy prostate and testes function.

Throughout the month of June 2016, I’m offering men’s health products Prost-X, Prostate PMG and Symplex M all for 20% off!

Ask me about which one is best for you (or your loved one) when you are in the office.

Link Between Low Vitamin D Levels, Dementia Confirmed

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. T,

Just when we thought we’d heard the latest news on the nutritional relevance of vitamin D, an interesting study was just published by University of Exeter in the U.K.  This robust international study associated vitamin D deficiency with a substantially increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in older people. An international team found that study participants who were severely vitamin D deficient were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the study, dementia is one of the greatest challenges of our time, with 44 million cases worldwide — a number expected to triple by 2050 as a result of rapid population aging. A billion people worldwide are thought to have low vitamin D levels and many older adults may experience poorer health as a result.

The study found evidence that there is a threshold level of Vitamin D circulating in the bloodstream below which the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease increases. They discovered that adults in the study who were moderately deficient in vitamin D had a 53 per cent increased risk of developing dementia of any kind, and the risk increased to 125 per cent in those who were severely deficient.

Vitamin D comes from three main sources — exposure of skin to sunlight, foods such as oily fish, and supplements. In California, we have the opportunity for sun exposure practically year round.  While using sunblock for prolonged sun exposure is advised, fifteen minutes of sun a day without sunblock is enough for most people to build healthy vitamin D reserves.

Yet another reason to take a walk in the park and eat wild caught salmon twice a week!

Until next time…
