Who Says Santa Isn’t Alive and Well in Burbank?

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. T:
At Thorburn Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we’re celebrating Christmas by supporting the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program and the Farm Worker’s Education Christmas program. You can feel great by helping others this holiday season!
The spirit of giving is the very essence of the season and there are always people in need who will appreciate the kindness of receiving. I encourage everyone to think of others during this special time.
The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program provides new clothing or toys for children of families in need through the support of donors. Thorburn Chiropractic has angel tags with the first name, age and gender of a child in need of presents available to their patients. Contributors take one or more tags and purchase appropriate gifts for the child or children described on the tags.
Unwrapped toys for children are also being collected by Thorburn Chiropractic for a Christmas party for over 200 children of farm workers through the Farm Worker’s Education Christmas program.
This is the 15th year that Thorburn Chiropractic and Wellness Center has supported charitable holiday giving.
Please decide which program you will be supporting as the deadline for dropping off toys for the Farm Worker’s Education Christmas program is Tuesday, December 16. The deadline for turning in Angel Tree gifts is Friday, December 19.
Thank you, and from everyone at Thorburn Chiropractic, have a very happy holiday season!
Until next time…

Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

Posted on Updated on

Dr. T’s Health Tip – Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
Greetings from Dr. T:
According to a recent survey by NBC’s Today Show, 46% of adults over 18 say they don’t get enough sleep. Experts offer advice like avoiding electronic devices hours before bedtime, watching caffeine intake, practicing relaxation techniques and going to bed and rising at the same times daily. What else can you do to loll yourself into restful sleep?
Do you wake up with neck pain, back pain or headaches? I have found that these all can be due to poor sleeping habits, a mattress that is past its prime, or a pillow that doesn’t fit your body.
If you sleep on your stomach at all, this can be a major strain on your neck. You need to be turned to one side to breathe properly. I recommend sleeping on your back or side. When sleeping on your back, use a neck pillow or neck roll for the best support.
When sleeping on your side, a long body pillow is a great help. The pillow is almost as long as one’s body and it allows you to put your arm or leg over it while sleeping, supporting your spine. You can also use the body pillow propped behind you so that you can rest against it.
To find a good mattress, go to a mattress store and test the various levels of quality and firmness. See which level of firmness you prefer. Get the most expensive mattress you can afford, as it’s an investment that will pay big dividends in your wellbeing. Pillow toppers aren’t the best as they tend to indent and are not usually covered under warranty. I personally use a Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress, but buy it only if you love it.
Here’s to your well-supported and comfortable sleep!

Until next time…

Avoiding Colds & Flu

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. T:
The cold and flu season is upon us, so here are some tips for staying healthy as we head into the holidays:
1. Wash your hands more often and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs and viruses gain access to our bodies through our eyes, nasal passages, mouth and ears.
2. Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, and fresh salads, focusing on consuming chemical-free, whole foods.
3. Maintain stable blood sugar by eliminating sugar and sugary products from your diet. (Easier said than done during the holidays!) Sugar has been proven to weaken the cells of our immune system.
4. Vitamin C and Echinacea (herb or tea) have been proven as immune boosters when taken at the beginning of the cold and flu season.
5. Get good sleep. Consistent, adequate sleep is vitally important to overall health and a well-functioning immune system.
6. Don’t forget water. Make sure to maintain your usual hydration, especially if you choose to consume alcoholic beverages. Alcohol dehydrates the system and leaves it vulnerable to illness.
7. Most of all, enjoy the season!

Link Between Low Vitamin D Levels, Dementia Confirmed

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. T,

Just when we thought we’d heard the latest news on the nutritional relevance of vitamin D, an interesting study was just published by University of Exeter in the U.K.  This robust international study associated vitamin D deficiency with a substantially increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in older people. An international team found that study participants who were severely vitamin D deficient were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the study, dementia is one of the greatest challenges of our time, with 44 million cases worldwide — a number expected to triple by 2050 as a result of rapid population aging. A billion people worldwide are thought to have low vitamin D levels and many older adults may experience poorer health as a result.

The study found evidence that there is a threshold level of Vitamin D circulating in the bloodstream below which the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease increases. They discovered that adults in the study who were moderately deficient in vitamin D had a 53 per cent increased risk of developing dementia of any kind, and the risk increased to 125 per cent in those who were severely deficient.

Vitamin D comes from three main sources — exposure of skin to sunlight, foods such as oily fish, and supplements. In California, we have the opportunity for sun exposure practically year round.  While using sunblock for prolonged sun exposure is advised, fifteen minutes of sun a day without sunblock is enough for most people to build healthy vitamin D reserves.

Yet another reason to take a walk in the park and eat wild caught salmon twice a week!

Until next time…

Dr. T’s Health Tip – How Much Water Should We Drink?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. T,

During the sizzling summer months, everywhere we look we see Californians toting water bottles – in the car, at the beach, in the store, at the gym – we’re all taking water.  Yet so many people suffer from health issues that begin with dehydration.

Not drinking enough water can cause the discomfort of constipation, urinary tract infections and lead to painful kidney and bladder stones.  Heat stroke, headaches, and stomach pain are all potential effects of a lack of fluids. Chronic dehydration can cause inflammation, which leads to serious illness including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and more.

Watch how many caffeinated beverages you consume daily, as caffeine acts as a diuretic and depletes the system of electrolytes. Alcoholic beverages – even harmless little wine coolers – drain the system of important electrolytes.  Essential electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate, all necessary for the normal function of our organs.  Powdered electrolyte drinks are available for purchase at our office, but be sure to avoid sugar and chemical laden drinks like Gatorade.

Drinking plenty of fresh, filtered water can assist the digestive process, help lubricate arthritic joints, lower blood pressure, and give your skin good tone.  Fatigue, toxins in the system, and depression can all be washed away with a refreshing glass of water.

The human body is made up of 50 – 75% water, depending upon your age.  So how much water should you drink each day?  Recommendations vary, but perhaps the best way to judge your ideal consumption is by checking the color of your urine.  If your urine is dark yellow or orange, you’re not drinking enough water.

With so many options of enticing yet unhealthful drinks available to us today – from syrup-loaded coffees to super-sized sodas – it’s a good idea to go “old school” and stick with nature’s favorite thirst quencher – pure, unadulterated water.

Until next time…

Yours in health,

Dr. T

ImageHearts will be happier and kids will be standing straighter and taller this Valentine’s Day, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Charlene Thorburn and the staff of Thorburn Chiropractic and Wellness Center.  Dr. Thorburn will hold a day-long “Have a Heart Day” featuring $9.00 spinal health screenings on Friday February 14th for kids and adults.  All proceeds will be donated to the Burbank Community YMCA.

“We are sick and tired of seeing so many people – especially children – with preventable illnesses, so we’ve decided to do something about it,” reports Dr. Thorburn.

According to JodiLyn Reneaud, Sr. Director of Healthy Living at the Burbank Community YMCA, “The Burbank Community YMCA provides a loving, stimulating environment where children discover, explore, experiment and grow at their own pace. Because healthy living is at the heart of everything the Y does, only healthy snacks based on whole foods and fresh produce are provided.”

“In addition to the full-day preschool program offered at our accredited Child Development Center, children can enjoy many other programs at the Y, like ballet, gymnastics, swimming, basketball, youth and family fitness classes, and there’s also free childcare while parents are exercising…all on-site.”

For the Valentine’s Day celebration, Dr. Thorburn’s office will feature music, healthy snacks, and free mini massages that will give the doctor’s office a fun, festive atmosphere.  The health screenings will also include consultations and scoliosis checks.  The free massages will be available from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Thorburn says: “We have a special affinity for children and love to help get them off to a strong and healthy start.”

Dr. Thorburn’s “Have a Heart Day” is a day-long celebration that is open to all children and adults in the community.  It takes place from 9:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday February 14th.  Call ahead at (818) 841-1313 to schedule.

Burbank CA Chiropractor Dr. Thorburn Gives Free Chair Back Supports for Bringing Xmas Toys for Kids

Posted on

Burbank, CA, December 3, 2013 — Dr. Charlene Thorburn, R.N., D.C. of Burbank CA. is hosting her annual “Holiday Health Special to Benefit Needy Kids” in which each new patient coming into the office for chiropractic care will receive a free ergonomic chair “Back Saver Support” for bringing in a toy for a needy child.

In addition to hosting toy drives for needy kids, Dr. Thorburn contributes to the community by raising funds for the YMCA, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, and Burbank Temporary Aid Center. This year’s Health Special will benefit dozens of children of seasonal workers in the local area – kids who would otherwise be without presents this Christmas.

The Holiday Health Special runs from December 2nd to December 15th, 2013.   All new patients coming in to Dr. Thorburn’s office with a toy during these dates will receive one of her most popular therapeutic back supports for free.  The breathable mesh fabric back support helps to maintain correct posture and reduce tension and discomfort by maintaining the proper curves in the lower back while sitting, and it fits on any type of chair or car seat.

In order to qualify for the free back support, new patients must receive one regular service at their first visit, whether it’s a chiropractic adjustment, nutritional consultation or other service. The toys should be brought in their original box or packaging and be unopened and unwrapped. The age range for the gifts is one through nineteen.

Dr. Charlene Thorburn is a recent winner of the Top Doc L.A. Award and Talk of the Town Award for excellence in Customer Satisfaction for a Chiropractor. For almost three decades Dr. Thorburn has cared for the Burbank community and beyond and has donated her time and expertise in a variety of ways. From providing no-charge back and neck check-ups to company employees to help them stay healthy on the job, to educating seniors at adult centers on how to prevent osteoporosis and eat right; to presenting wellness and nutrition talks at the local movie studios.

Ashley G., who works at a local movie studio in Burbank, had been having such bad back pain she couldn’t sleep. She says: “I thought Dr. Thorburn would fix my back and that would be that. I had no idea that she would go above and beyond that. I’ve also always had a problem with daily migraines and numbness in my arm, but after seeing Dr. T regularly I no longer have any of those problems. My back feels as good as new and I haven’t had any migraines since I started seeing her. Not to mention I get a much deeper, more restful sleep now too. I can’t even imagine my life without Dr. T.”

Dr. Thorburn’s “Holiday Health Special to Benefit Needy Kids” is a great opportunity to help one’s own health while also helping to fill a child with joy this Christmas. Come and visit Dr. Thorburn for the holidays and bring your family and friends. Call ahead to schedule. Phone is (818) 841-1313. Address is 1612 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank CA. 91506.
