PMS – A Natural Approach

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Ahhhh those pesky hormones! How many ways can we be affected by them when they go astray?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) often occurs when the hormones are not in balance. Symptoms may include acne, swollen breasts, bloating, mood swings, sleep disturbances, headache, backache, appetite changes, aches and pains, irritability, anxiety and probably a few more unpleasant things. Many women experience such symptoms a week or so before their menstrual cycle.

I do not believe that we were designed to suffer. When we do suffer, there may be natural ways to get things back into balance so the body can heal and regulate itself. There are lifestyle habits one should develop that will help get the hormones balanced, including:

  • Exercise two and a half hours a week
  • Avoid salt, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and chemicals in food
  • Get eight hours sleep each night (yes, you can do it!)
  • Eat lots of vegetables and some fruits

Acupuncture can also help with some of the symptoms of PMS. We have an excellent acupuncturist on staff here in our center.

There are various vitamins and supplements that can help with PMS symptoms including calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, black cohosh, chasteberry, evening primrose oil, and more.

But how do you know which ones to take and when?

You could experiment for a few years trying to find the right combination…or you can make an appointment with me for Nutrition Deficiency Testing so we can find the organs of the body that need support so you can heal yourself.

Give your body what it needs and wants so you can feel great again!

This is Beach Week!… Just a reminder that through Saturday, September 3 we are celebrating Beach Week. Come “Hang Ten” with us and enjoy fun, free snacks and drinks, beach music, and more. Tell your friends and family about our New Patient Special. Only during Beach Week, new patients without chiropractic coverage get their first visit for $29 cash, a $177 value! (Those with health insurance pay their usual co-pay as required by their health insurance.)  Every time you refer a new person to us during Beach Week, you will enter our drawing for a one-hour massage and a month supply of our organic multivitamin. There’s no limit to how many times you can refer and enter! Drawing will be held on Saturday, September 3 and you don’t need to be present to win.

What to Do About Osteoporosis

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

August is Women’s Health Month, so I thought I would start off by talking about osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a common bone condition that makes bones thinner and more fragile. It puts people at risk of fractures, especially of the hip, spinal vertebrae and wrist. Osteoporosis is most common in women, but it also affects men as well.

There are simple things you can do that can help build up your bones and lower your risk of osteoporosis.

Calcium-rich foods that will help build up your bones include dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, sardines and salmon with the bones in, tuna, broccoli and almonds. Calcium pills are not well absorbed and need to be taken in an acid environment. We can help you find the right calcium for you so that you absorb it well. Protein is very important for bone health, especially lean poultry and fish, nuts and seeds, dry beans and eggs.

Foods that leach calcium from your bones are many. Salty foods – from processed meats to canned soups, fast food and packaged baked goods – are all loaded with salt and cause the loss of calcium.  Also, caffeine, and sodas – including carbonated waters and club soda — should be limited or avoided.

But if you already have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, we have a real-food nutritional product available that is so powerful, it’s actually classified as a medical food. Medical foods are foods developed in such a way that they treat a medical condition. Based on studies, they are approved by the FDA.

Osteoben ™ has been approved to treat osteoporosis/osteopenia. It is plant based and helps bones become stronger without serious side effects. It also reduces hot flashes in menopausal women (exciting for those of you with hot flashes) and reduces some predictors of unhealthy heart risks.

Because Osteoben is not a drug but rather a medical food, no prescription is necessary.  If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis or have a family history of osteoporosis, this product may be right for you. Call our office for more information, stop by, or let’s talk about it during your next appointment.

Specials for women only during the month of August…We have several products on 20% off sale in celebration of Women’s Health Month. They are Osteoben™ (osteoporosis), Symplex F (supports the healthy function of the ovaries and the adrenal, pituitary and thyroid glands), Evening Primrose Oil (hormone balance), Adrenal Support (emotional balance) and Thyroid Support (thyroid). Ask about them at the front desk next time you are in.

Until next time…

Yours in health,

Belching, Bloating & Gas: Six Simple Tips for Avoiding Them

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

In some countries, belching after dinner is considered the polite way of thanking your host for a great meal. But here in the USA, belching and cousins bloating and gas are considered digestive issues that cause discomfort we can all live without. Plus, over 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract, which makes healthy digestion a key element in your overall wellness.

Here are six simple steps you can take to insure better digestion.

Chew your food.  Chewing your food well allows your saliva to start breaking down the food for smoother digestion.  Eat slowly and deliberately.

Handle stress.  When you’re stressed, the fight-or-flight reaction begins and digestion slows.  Your body shuts down blood flow, which affects digestive muscles.  Take time to relax, breathe deeply, and let go of the stresses in your life.

Get regular exercise.  When you exercise, you support the muscles of your intestines, which maintain regularity.  Exercise also helps to reduce stress, supporting healthy digestion.

Take supplements.  I can recommend supplements targeted to your personal needs.  From enzymes to probiotics, we have a full range of food-based nutritional products to support your digestive health.  See our July digestive specials below.

Stay hydrated.  Drinking pure, fresh water supports regularity and the health of the digestive system. Avoid sodas as they contain unhealthy sugars such as high fructose corn syrup or artificial sugar substitutes.  And, the carbonation can cause gas. Limit caffeinated beverages and eliminate alcohol.

Eat more fiber.  Eat a well-balanced diet, and avoid processed foods, sugars and highly refined carbohydrates.  Fiber-rich foods are excellent for digestion. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and limit grains and high-fat meats.

July is Digestion Awareness Month…and we have specials!  During the month of July, we have several digestive products on sale for 20% off from Standard Process, a wonderful line of nutritional supplements available only through doctors.

Products on special include Multizyme (digestive enzyme), Betaine Hydrochloride (digestive enzyme), Lact-Enz (digestive enzyme, probiotic),ProSynbiotic (probiotic), Whole Food Fiber, Chlorophyll Complex (soothes an inflamed gut) and Cataplex A-C (helps heal the lining of the gut).

Ask me which product is best for you!

Until next time…

Do You Know What Your Liver Does?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

We have all heard a lot about the liver. We know that we must have a well-functioning one for us to live. And most of us know that the liver can be adversely affected by unhealthy habits such as excessive alcohol consumption and eating a diet high in red meat fats.

But what, exactly, is the liver and what does it do?

The liver is the largest gland in the body. It is a spongy mass of wedge-shaped lobes that has many functions. The liver secretes bile, a digestive fluid and it metabolizes proteins, carbohydrates and fats. It stores glycogen, a form of glucose the body uses for energy, as well as vitamins and other substances. The liver synthesizes blood clotting factors and it removes waste and toxic substances from the blood. It regulates blood volume and destroys old red blood cells.

There are a number of lifestyle activities that can cause permanent damage to the liver and consequently, damage to your overall health.  Cirrhosis, a serious disease of the liver, occurs when the liver cells are damaged and replaced by scar tissue because of chronic inflammation. Inflammation can develop because of chronic viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, excessive consumption of alcohol, some drugs and other harmful substances.

According to the American Liver Foundation, here are a few simple things you can do to keep your liver healthy for life:

  • Eat a healthy diet and engage in moderate exercise on a regular basis. Eat foods from all of the food groups each day. Focus on fresh, high fiber foods like fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
  • Manage your medications. When medications are taken incorrectly or the wrong ones are combined, liver damage may result. Follow dosing instructions correctly. Discuss all of the medications and supplements you take with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Avoid breathing or touching toxins. Limit direct contact with chemical cleaning products and insecticides. And don’t smoke.

The best natural liver detoxifier now on sale…For over two thousand years, milk thistle has been used as a treatment for liver disorders, including cirrhosis, jaundice and hepatitis.  But most of all, milk thistle is known to optimize the function and maximize the detoxifying and cleansing potential of the liver.  During the month of June, we have  Wellness Ninja Milk Thistle for a special sale price. Regularly $27.99, now through the end of June, 120 175 mg. capsules are only $17.99.

Also, natural products for men only during the month of June, Men’s Health Month … I recommend a line of natural supplements, available only through doctors, called Standard Process that features a number of products which are extremely effective for encouraging healthy prostate and testes function.

Throughout the month of June 2016, I’m offering men’s health products Prost-X, Prostate PMG and Symplex M all for 20% off!

June is Men’s Health Month… so can we talk?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

June is Men’s Health Month, and it’s time for men to learn more about their bodies and how to keep them healthy for life!

Let’s start off the month by talking about….the prostate gland.

The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut. It’s located just below the bladder and it surrounds the urethra, a tube that carries urine and semen out of the body. As part of the male reproductive system, the prostate gland’s main purpose is to secrete a slightly alkaline fluid that forms part of the seminal fluid, a fluid that carries sperm.

According to the nonprofit Men’s Health Network, more than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life.

What can you do to have a healthy prostate?

Eating healthy is a great start. Foods that nourish the prostate include wild salmon, walnuts, sesame seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bell peppers, cabbage, onions and garlic.  Be sure to eat five servings of vegetables a day.

Maintaining a healthy weight and enjoying moderate exercise is good for the prostate and your overall health.

Get to know your body. Do you know what a baseline is? A baseline is what is normal for you. When you establish a baseline, you have something to compare changes to, and it’s easier to share that information with a doctor to determine if you are having an issue. Self-awareness can go a long way when it comes to health maintenance.

Natural products for men only during the month of June, Men’s Health Month … I recommend a line of natural supplements, available only through doctors, called Standard Process that features a number of products which are extremely effective for encouraging healthy prostate and testes function.

Throughout the month of June 2016, I’m offering men’s health products Prost-X, Prostate PMG and Symplex M all for 20% off!

Ask me about which one is best for you (or your loved one) when you are in the office.

Here’s wishing you a relaxing, safe and sane holiday weekend!

Quinoa and Snap Pea Salad (yields six one cup servings)

Ingredients:

2 cups water

1 cup quinoa

2 cups fresh snap peas, trimmed and cut diagonally into quarters

1 1/2 cups button mushrooms, cut into quarters or more if they are large

1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion, cut into ½ inch lengths

1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

1/3 cup white balsamic vinegar or white wine vinegar

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil

1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon pure maple syrup

Combine water and quinoa in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside to cool completely. Chill if a cold salad is desired.

Combine peas, mushrooms, onion and dill in a medium bowl. Whisk vinegar, oil, lemon zest, lemon juice and maple syrup in a small bowl. Stir the dressing into the cooled quinoa. Add the quinoa to the vegetable mixture, toss and serve. Enjoy!

Could it be What’s on Your Fork?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

When is an allergy not an allergy at all?  When it is a food sensitivity.

Food sensitivities can result in symptoms such as headaches, dark circles under the eyes, nasal congestion not associated with pollens, sore throats, aches and pains, fatigue and even a “fuzzy” brain.

While it’s not an allergy in the usual sense, it is a chemical change in the body that affects you.   Allergies and food sensitivities are both immune systems issues.

Food sensitivities can be difficult to determine and diagnose, mostly because we Americans eat such a wide variety of foods each day.  Dairy products, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, gluten, corn, soy, sugar, corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, beef, pork, lamb and coffee are common foods that cause food sensitivities.  But we humans are all very individual, so we can be sensitive to just about any food group.

Through a non-invasive screening process called Nutrition Deficiency Testing, we can determine what it is that is stressing your system so you can eliminate that particular food from your diet and relieve your chronic symptoms.

Call our office today to find out about our special offer for your first test to see if you have food sensitivities.
