Does Autism Spectrum Disorder Start in the Womb?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Autism is a disorder that involves abnormal development and function of the brain. People with autism show decreased social communication skills and restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviors or interests. One in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1 in 88 two years ago, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Boys are affected by ASD more often than girls.

While the cause of ASD is unknown, it is plausible that environmental toxins and nutritional deficiencies could lead to the damage of our nervous systems. Heavy metals, for instance, are known to be neurotoxic (damage nerve tissue).

Recent research indicates that ASD may begin in the womb. Prudent health researchers and preventative health practitioners agree that avoidance of toxins will do nothing but good for you and your gestating child.

Here’s a suggested list of items to avoid during pregnancy and keep away from your growing child once they are born:

  • Avoid using chemical pesticides and herbicides in your home and backyard.
  • Don’t smoke and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • Avoid any products containing aluminum, including cookware, cans and yes, most personal deodorants. Look for deodorants that are aluminum free.
  • Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating and go organic whenever possible.
  • Avoid canned foods, which can absorb BPA from the can linings.
  • Use glass containers instead of plastic to store and heat food.
  • Use natural skin care products without artificial ingredients and chemical fragrances.
  • Use natural cleaning products in your home.
  • Avoid antibacterial soap and toothpaste containing triclosan.
  • Avoid chemical fumes, especially paint fumes.  Let someone else paint the nursery.

Until next time…

Could Shopping be Hazardous to Your Health?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Receipts from cash registers, gas pumps and ATMs are coated with the chemical BPA and it can be readily introduced into the bloodstream through the skin. Unlike BPA in plastic bottles and other products, BPA on thermal cash register paper isn’t chemically bound in any way: it’s a powdery film on the surface of receipts that easily transfers to skin and other things it touches. Hand lotions, oils and sanitizers can speed up the absorption process.

Thomas Zoeller Ph.D., co-chair of the Endocrine Society’s Global Task Force on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts, states that handling receipts can be harmful to your health. Endocrine disruptors such as BPA are chemicals that act like hormones in the body and may affect fertility and cause developmental defects.

According to a study by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG), some major chains including Target, Starbucks, and Bank of America ATM’s issue receipts that are BPA-free or only contain trace amounts. Major retailers using BPA-containing receipts in at least some outlets include McDonalds, CVS, KFC, Whole Foods, Walmart, Safeway and the U.S. Postal Service.

Here are some tips from the EWG on the safe handling of receipts:

  • Minimize receipt collection by declining receipts at gas pumps, ATMs and other machines when possible.
  • Store receipts separately in an envelope in a wallet or purse.
  • Never give a child a receipt to hold or play with.
  • After handling a receipt, wash hands before preparing and eating food (a universally recommended practice even for those who have not handled receipts).
  • Do not use alcohol-based hand cleaners after handling receipts. A recent study showed that these products can increase the skin’s BPA absorption (Biedermann 2010).
  • Take advantage of store services that email or archive paperless purchase records.
  • Do not recycle receipts and other thermal paper. BPA residues from receipts will contaminate recycled paper.
  • If you are unsure, check whether paper is thermally treated by rubbing it with a coin. Thermal paper discolors with the friction; conventional paper does not.
Until next time…

PMS – A Natural Approach

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Ahhhh those pesky hormones! How many ways can we be affected by them when they go astray?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) often occurs when the hormones are not in balance. Symptoms may include acne, swollen breasts, bloating, mood swings, sleep disturbances, headache, backache, appetite changes, aches and pains, irritability, anxiety and probably a few more unpleasant things. Many women experience such symptoms a week or so before their menstrual cycle.

I do not believe that we were designed to suffer. When we do suffer, there may be natural ways to get things back into balance so the body can heal and regulate itself. There are lifestyle habits one should develop that will help get the hormones balanced, including:

  • Exercise two and a half hours a week
  • Avoid salt, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and chemicals in food
  • Get eight hours sleep each night (yes, you can do it!)
  • Eat lots of vegetables and some fruits

Acupuncture can also help with some of the symptoms of PMS. We have an excellent acupuncturist on staff here in our center.

There are various vitamins and supplements that can help with PMS symptoms including calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, black cohosh, chasteberry, evening primrose oil, and more.

But how do you know which ones to take and when?

You could experiment for a few years trying to find the right combination…or you can make an appointment with me for Nutrition Deficiency Testing so we can find the organs of the body that need support so you can heal yourself.

Give your body what it needs and wants so you can feel great again!

What to Do About Osteoporosis

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

August is Women’s Health Month, so I thought I would start off by talking about osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a common bone condition that makes bones thinner and more fragile. It puts people at risk of fractures, especially of the hip, spinal vertebrae and wrist. Osteoporosis is most common in women, but it also affects men as well.

There are simple things you can do that can help build up your bones and lower your risk of osteoporosis.

Calcium-rich foods that will help build up your bones include dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, sardines and salmon with the bones in, tuna, broccoli and almonds. Calcium pills are not well absorbed and need to be taken in an acid environment. We can help you find the right calcium for you so that you absorb it well. Protein is very important for bone health, especially lean poultry and fish, nuts and seeds, dry beans and eggs.

Foods that leach calcium from your bones are many. Salty foods – from processed meats to canned soups, fast food and packaged baked goods – are all loaded with salt and cause the loss of calcium.  Also, caffeine, and sodas – including carbonated waters and club soda — should be limited or avoided.

But if you already have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, we have a real-food nutritional product available that is so powerful, it’s actually classified as a medical food. Medical foods are foods developed in such a way that they treat a medical condition. Based on studies, they are approved by the FDA.

Osteoben ™ has been approved to treat osteoporosis/osteopenia. It is plant based and helps bones become stronger without serious side effects. It also reduces hot flashes in menopausal women (exciting for those of you with hot flashes) and reduces some predictors of unhealthy heart risks.

Because Osteoben is not a drug but rather a medical food, no prescription is necessary.  If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis or have a family history of osteoporosis, this product may be right for you. Call our office for more information, stop by, or let’s talk about it during your next appointment.

Specials for women only during the month of August…We have several products on 20% off sale in celebration of Women’s Health Month. They are Osteoben™ (osteoporosis), Symplex F (supports the healthy function of the ovaries and the adrenal, pituitary and thyroid glands), Evening Primrose Oil (hormone balance), Adrenal Support (emotional balance) and Thyroid Support (thyroid). Ask about them at the front desk next time you are in.

Until next time…

Why Do I Have Three Pounds of Organisms in My Gut?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

How can I possibly have three pounds of organisms in my gut?  I mean, I eat healthy foods, I eliminate twice a day, I drink plenty of water, I get plenty of exercise and…

Relax!  Having these organisms — at least the good ones — in your gut is a healthy thing!  And believe it or not, it’s been proven that every person has at least one organism in their gut that is unique to them only – a signature organism, if you will.

Yes, at any given time, there are 100 trillion bacteria circulating around the walls of your intestines.

If you are eating as much sugar as the average American – about 100 pounds a year – then you are feeding the bad bacteria rather than nourishing the good bacteria that keeps you healthy. Digestive symptoms indicative of too much bad gut bacteria include constipation, excess gas, chronic diarrhea and chronic bad breath.

Good bacteria, on the other hand, spend their time destroying bad bacteria, digesting your food and assisting in the absorption of nutrients. They welcome healthful nutrients while waving away any harmful viruses or bugs. They readily provide up to 70% of your immune system.

Stress, poor diet and the use of antibiotics can adversely affect the delicate balance of your intestines and wreak havoc on your immune system.

You can influence the composition of the bacteria in your gut by cutting out refined sugars, eating fermented vegetables, and supplementing with a high quality probiotic supplement.

Another way to help keep your intestinal flora happy is by adding prebiotic foods to your diet. Prebiotics feed probiotics. The top prebiotic foods include raw chicory root, raw Jerusalem artichoke, raw dandelion greens, raw garlic, raw leeks, raw and cooked onion, raw asparagus, raw jicama and raw bananas.

July is Digestion Awareness Month…and we have specials!  During the month of July, we have several digestive products on sale for 20% off from Standard Process, a wonderful line of nutritional supplements available only through doctors.

Products on special include Multizyme (digestive enzyme), Betaine Hydrochloride (digestive enzyme), Prebiotic Inulin, Lact-Enz (digestive enzyme, probiotic), ProSynbiotic (probiotic), Whole Food Fiber, Chlorophyll Complex (soothes an inflamed gut) and Cataplex A-C (helps heal the lining of the gut).

Ask me which product is best for you!

Until next time…

Gut on Fire!

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

The sensation of having your gut on fire is no laughing matter. The pain, discomfort, fatigue and stress that stomach burning may cause can make daily life miserable. Unfortunately, gut on fire is an all too common problem due to indigestible, inorganic foods, over use of antibiotics, chlorinated water and the like.

You may not experience a lot of the symptoms in the early stages, yet the inflammation can lead to disorders including autoimmune conditions.

What is gut on fire?

Your small bowel is full of live organisms. There is a constant balancing act at work in your gut. If it becomes extremely unbalanced, your gut can become inflamed and/or you can develop what is called leaky gut as a result of eating foods that are hard for you to digest.

For example, if you have sensitivity to gluten and eat a meal containing bread or pasta, these foods can be your trigger. Painful gas and inflammation develop and your stomach churns, taking the nutrients in your food and sending them out of your body before they are properly digested.

After a time, tiny tears can occur in your intestines that cause proteins to leak into your bloodstream, potentially leading to colitis, diverticulitis, edema and bloating.

Many people have what may look like a fat or distended tummy which turns out to not be fat at all, but rather gas and inflammation.

Gut on fire can also cause fuzzy brain, poor memory, dizziness and forgetfulness.

It’s very important to keep your tummy happy!  Live probiotics can balance the organisms naturally occurring in your gut.  Don’t be deceived by commercial yogurts advertising that they contain live probiotics, while at the same time they are loaded with sugars that render them virtually useless to your system. Your body needs pure, live probiotics to repopulate your gut and relieve that gassy, burning sensation.

July is Digestion Awareness Month…and we have specials!  During the month of July, we have several digestive products on sale for 20% off from Standard Process, a wonderful line of nutritional supplements available only through doctors.

Products on special include Multizyme (digestive enzyme), Betaine Hydrochloride (digestive enzyme), Lact-Enz (digestive enzyme, probiotic),ProSynbiotic (probiotic), Whole Food Fiber, Chlorophyll Complex (soothes an inflamed gut) and Cataplex A-C (helps heal the lining of the gut).
