It’s Men’s Health Month… [Who Could Use a Little Help?]

Posted on

June is Men’s Health Month, so it’s time for men to learn more about their bodies and how to stay healthy for life!

Let’s start off the month by talking about….the prostate gland.

The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut. It’s located just below the bladder and it surrounds the urethra, a tube that carries urine and semen out of the body. As part of the male reproductive system, the prostate gland’s main purpose is to secrete a slightly alkaline fluid that forms part of the seminal fluid, a fluid that carries sperm.

According to the nonprofit Men’s Health Network, more than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life. And men, this includes your sex life!

What can you do to have a healthy prostate?

Eating healthy is a great start. Foods that nourish the prostate include wild salmon, walnuts, sesame seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bell peppers, cabbage, onions, and garlic.  Be sure to eat five servings of vegetables a day.

Maintaining a healthy weight and enjoying moderate exercise is good for the prostate and your overall health.

Get to know your body. Do you know what a baseline is? A baseline is what is normal for you. When you establish a baseline, you have something to compare changes to, and it’s easier to share that information with a doctor to determine if you are having an issue.

Natural products for men only during the month of June, Men’s Health Month … Before you consider taking a little blue pill…I encourage you to try natural supplements to increase your sexual vitality.

I recommend a line of natural supplements, available only through doctors, called Standard Process, that feature a number of products which are extremely effective for encouraging healthy prostate and testes function. Throughout the month of June 2017, I’m offering 20% off men’s health products Prost-X, Prostate PMG, Zinc Liver Chelate and Symplex M.

Ask me about which one is best for you (or your loved one) when you are in the office.

Until next time…

Yours in health,

Burbank Chiropractor Believes Natural Pain Relief Is Better for Your Heart

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

A study published in the March issue of European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy indicates that the use of NSAIDs – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), naproxen (Aleve), and more – may increase the risk of cardiac arrest. This is yet another reason why this Burbank chiropractor recommends avoiding NSAIDs in favor of natural pain relief methods.

The findings from this recent study add to those of previous research, which has also found a link between NSAID use and a higher risk of heart problems, including heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. The new study, conducted in Denmark, is the first to look specifically at the impact of NSAIDs on cardiac arrest risk. The researchers analyzed information from more than 28,000 people who experienced cardiac arrest somewhere other than a hospital during a 10-year period.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration previously warned that NSAIDs, particularly at higher doses, may increase people’s risk of heart attack or stroke.

We humans will always have pain. If you are active and play sports, run, or work out, you have an even higher risk of pain caused by inflammation.  But there are natural, food-based nutritional alternatives to NSAIDs.  When you come in for an appointment, we can talk about which is best for you and your personal needs.

Lower back pain is one of the most common problems plaguing adults today. Causes include muscle strain, accidental twisting of the spine, improper lifting of a heavy object, or sitting too long in chairs with inadequate support. As a Burbank chiropractor treating patients here for over 30 years, lower back pain is one of the most common issues we address daily.

At Thorburn Chiropractic and Wellness Center, we offer many natural treatments including chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, and electrical muscle stimulation. Utilizing these methods in unison can bring the swiftest pain relief possible and encourage the body to rapidly heal itself.

If you or a friend or loved one is suffering from chronic or acute pain, give us a call and come in. We have a better, natural solution.

Acupuncture Special through the month of May 2017…Through the end of May, we will be offering a special for first-time acupuncture patients. The regular price for a first visit is $120, but the special offer is only $79 for an initial consultation and treatment.  Please call our office for an appointment.

Until next time…

Celebrate Earth Day With Us

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

This Saturday, April 22 marks the 47th anniversary of Earth Day, and on this day over a billion people in nearly 200 countries are expected to take action to protect our shared environment.

But why wait for just one day?  Why not celebrate and care for our precious environment all year long?  The changes you make today have a greater likelihood to become a part of your lifestyle if you consciously repeat them over time.

I know that for me, every day is Earth Day. At the office, we recycle and reuse everything we can. We are conservative with water usage and turn on lights and air conditioning in rooms as needed.  I happily drive a Prius that gets amazing mileage with very little carbon footprint.

Here are a few suggestions for how you can celebrate Earth Day every day in your lifestyle and home.

  • Use your cloth bags. We all have a collection of cloth bags gathering dust in the trunk of our car. If you shop in Burbank or the Los Angeles area, you will pay ten cents for a heavy plastic, reusable bag if you don’t bring your own.  Don’t buy it.  Place your paid-for items back in the cart and bag them as you put them in your trunk. Or buy a paper bag if you must. They are great for holding recycling.
  • Start composting. If you live where you have a yard or garden, you can compost. More than a billion pounds of food are thrown away each year. Help make a difference by turning your food waste into soil.
  • Buy local produce. Eat fresher and healthier by buying local produce. Look for the closest Farmer’s Market to where you live and become a regular shopper.
  • Recycle your e-waste. Every year, thousands of old electronic devices — we’re talking big old TV’s, computer printers, etc. — are tossed into landfills, polluting the environment when they can be recycled. Go online and find out where you can take your old electronics for recycling.
  • Use less water.  The city of Los Angeles recently announced that we are reaching our water conservation goals. This is no time to get lazy! Turn the water off when you brush your teeth. Take shorter showers. Run the clothes and dishwasher with full loads only. In this drought-prone region, it’s only a matter of time before this precious commodity is at a premium once again.

Happy Earth Day!

Until next time…

Drinking Tea Can Be Good for Brain Health

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

A cup of tea a day may be just what the doctor ordered for lifelong brain health.  And this may be especially so for those who are genetically predisposed to debilitating Alzheimer’s disease.

This is according to a recent study led by Assistant Professor Feng Lei from the Department of Psychological Medicine at the National University of Singapore. The study involving 957 Chinese seniors aged 55 years or older found that regular consumption of tea lowers the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly by 50%. The study also found that APOE e4 gene carriers who are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease may experience a reduction in cognitive impairment risk by as much as 86%.

Researchers also discovered that the neuroprotective role of tea consumption on cognitive function is not limited to a particular type of tea. As long the tea is brewed from tea leaves, such as green, black, or oolong tea, they all have the same protective effect.

Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the United States. In 2015, more than 3.6 billion gallons of tea were consumed, with black tea being the most popular.

What makes tea so effective for good brain health?

According to Assistant Professor Feng, “Based on current knowledge, this long term benefit of tea consumption is due to the bioactive compounds in tea leaves, such as catechins, theaflavins, thearubigins and L-theanine. These compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential and other bioactive properties that may protect the brain from vascular damage and neurodegeneration. Our understanding of the detailed biological mechanisms is still very limited so we do need more research to find out definitive answers.”

The research team published their findings in scientific journal The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging in December 2016.

Tea time, anyone?

Until next time…

What You Need to Know About Vaccinations

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

As any parent in the state of California can tell you, since the passage of SB 277 in 2015, all children must have their vaccinations current in order to be enrolled in school.  Whether you are for vaccinations or against them, they are a mandatory fact of life. But besides what is mandated by the state, there is a lot more you (and I) need to know about vaccinations. And you can learn more by viewing a free web documentary series that airs beginning next Wednesday, April 12.

Vaccinations are not only given to children — there are many that are recommended that you take throughout your life and well into your senior years. This controversial topic often sets off a string of heated conversations that hinge more on ideology and “groupthink” than actual truth and scientific fact.

You owe it to yourself to make an informed decision about any healthcare you and members of your family receive. And this free documentary series will give you plenty of information from 60 of the world’s foremost health experts. This new cutting-edge series explores both sides of the vaccine debate and gives you the full story so that you can make your own decision about what’s best for you and your family.

Topics to be addressed include the history of vaccines and what diseases they have successfully eradicated over the years, vaccine risks and safety concerns, and options and alternatives. The series is hosted by New York Times best-selling author, Ty Bollinger. The episodes will be released one per day over seven days.

Beginning on Wednesday, April 12, this seven-episode series, “The Truth About Vaccines,” will be available free online.  I will be watching it, and I recommend that you do, too. Sign up at this secure link:  https://go.thetruthaboutvaccines.com

Yummy Recipe and Holiday Hours

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Where has this year gone?  It seems like it was just spring…then the days grew hotter and now they are shorter as we are coming to the end of 2016.  How are you doing with your personal health goals?  The end of the year is the perfect time to start thinking about 2017 and what you wish to achieve.  Whether it’s better control on your blood sugar, the loss of a few pounds, or better overall health…you can do it slowly but surely by making a plan and sticking to it.

But for now, let’s enjoy this special time with family and friends. Here’s a delicious recipe perfect for Christmas morning celebrations!  You can multiply it to make a larger batch depending upon the number of guests.

Gingerbread Pancakes   Serves 2

⅔ cup unsweetened almond milk

¼ cup egg whites

1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses

1 tablespoon chia seed

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

10 drops vanilla or regular stevia

⅔ cup flour of your choice – regular or gluten free.  Chickpea flour will make the pancakes high protein.

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger

⅛ teaspoon ground cloves

Combine almond milk and chia seed and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Preheat a small non-stick pan on medium-low heat for two minutes.  Combine the dry ingredients in a separate bowl, then add to the wet ingredients.  Stir until just mixed.  Pour a quarter of the mixture into the preheated pan. Allow the first side to cook for 3-4 minutes, or until bubbles form and the edges begin to turn golden. Flip and allow to cook for another 1-2 minutes. Place cooked pancake on cooling rack and repeat with remaining batter. Serve with melted coconut oil or butter, maple syrup, chopped apple and pecans. Enjoy!

Holiday hours… Make your appointments early as next week we will be closed Friday and Saturday, December 23 and 24 so that our staff can celebrate the Christmas holiday with their friends and family.  We will be open regular hours on Monday, December 26 and for the rest of New Years week including Friday and Saturday, December 30 and 31.  And, we will be open Monday, January 2.

December Acupuncture Special…We want to give all of our patients an opportunity to experience the healing power of acupuncture.  Acupuncture can be effective for pain management, stress and fatigue, digestive issues, migraines, skin disorders, and other common health issues. It has been known to promote overall well-being, balance, energy, immunity in the body. Acupuncture has been proven to help with women’s issues such as hormonal balance, PMS, and infertility.

Through the end of the year, we will be offering a special for first-time acupuncture patients. The regular price for a first visit is $120, but the special offer is only $79. Please call our office for an appointment with acupuncturist Jennifer Lavoro L.Ac. She sees patients on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Does Autism Spectrum Disorder Start in the Womb?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Autism is a disorder that involves abnormal development and function of the brain. People with autism show decreased social communication skills and restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviors or interests. One in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1 in 88 two years ago, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Boys are affected by ASD more often than girls.

While the cause of ASD is unknown, it is plausible that environmental toxins and nutritional deficiencies could lead to the damage of our nervous systems. Heavy metals, for instance, are known to be neurotoxic (damage nerve tissue).

Recent research indicates that ASD may begin in the womb. Prudent health researchers and preventative health practitioners agree that avoidance of toxins will do nothing but good for you and your gestating child.

Here’s a suggested list of items to avoid during pregnancy and keep away from your growing child once they are born:

  • Avoid using chemical pesticides and herbicides in your home and backyard.
  • Don’t smoke and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • Avoid any products containing aluminum, including cookware, cans and yes, most personal deodorants. Look for deodorants that are aluminum free.
  • Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating and go organic whenever possible.
  • Avoid canned foods, which can absorb BPA from the can linings.
  • Use glass containers instead of plastic to store and heat food.
  • Use natural skin care products without artificial ingredients and chemical fragrances.
  • Use natural cleaning products in your home.
  • Avoid antibacterial soap and toothpaste containing triclosan.
  • Avoid chemical fumes, especially paint fumes.  Let someone else paint the nursery.

Until next time…

GMOs and the Big Round Up

Posted on

Greetings from Dr.Thorburn:

Whether we like it or not, GMOs are a part of the American dietary landscape and they are something we all need to become more informed about.

According to the Grocery Manufacturers Association, 70-80% of the food we eat in the United States, both at home and away from home, contain GMO ingredients.  A GMO is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans.

The top ten most common GMO foods are soy, corn, canola oil, cotton (cottonseed oil), milk (cows are given hormones to develop and produce milk faster), sugar, aspartame, zucchini, yellow squash and papaya.

Most fresh produce, with the exception of those listed above, are non-GMO. Dried beans, grains, nuts and seeds are non-GMO. Meats, unless they are organically raised, have been fed GMO corn.

The easiest way to avoid GMOs is to buy food – especially any packaged food — that is 100% organic. Every day more and more foods proclaim on their labels and in their advertising that they are non-GMO. Non-GMO is desirable.  Food the way nature made it.  It’s time to learn more.

Why GMOs? Stock answers from food manufacturers include that science is finding ways to make heartier plants that are better able to withstand weather and come to harvest in less time.  Who could argue feeding more people quicker with the ever growing world population?  It is interesting to note that over half of the 28 European Union countries want nothing to do with GMOs.

A major GMO controversy revolves around Round Up, the herbicide produced by Monsanto. Round Up’s active ingredient is glyphosate, which when consumed has been shown to cause nutritional deficiencies, especially minerals, and system toxicity. The World Health Organization’s cancer authority, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, has determined that glyphosate “is probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Monsanto’s first Round Up ready crops – which means the plants have been engineered to stand up to Round Up exposure so that the herbicide can be used to get rid of accompanying weeds – was soy, introduced in 1996. Current Round Up ready crops include soy, corn, canola, alfalfa, cotton and sorghum with wheat in development.  Round Up ready seeds are sterile, so that farmers can no longer use the best seeds from a previous crop. Each year they must buy new seeds from Monsanto.

The nonprofit Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) was founded in 2003 by bestselling author and GMO expert Jeffrey Smith.  The IRT website (www.responsibletechnology.org) contains valuable information for the consumer.

An interesting article and study on the IRT website indicates that the proliferation of GMO foods and the affect of chemical residue (gylphosate) from Round Up weed killer used in growing these GMO foods may be contributing to the now 18 million Americans with gluten sensitivity.

Despite the protest of consumers across the state, in 2014 California lawmakers rejected the GMO Labeling Bill. Just two years before, Monsanto – makers of Round Up and Round Up ready GMO seeds – spent $46 million to kill Proposition 37, a California ballot initiative that would have mandated GMO labeling.

What can you do to avoid GMO foods?

Keep current on what’s going on with GMOs by signing up for an enewsletter from your choice of informational non-GMO websites.  Cook whole foods at home whenever possible.  And when you go shopping, look for foods that voluntarily label that they are non-GMO.

Until next time…

Could Shopping be Hazardous to Your Health?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Receipts from cash registers, gas pumps and ATMs are coated with the chemical BPA and it can be readily introduced into the bloodstream through the skin. Unlike BPA in plastic bottles and other products, BPA on thermal cash register paper isn’t chemically bound in any way: it’s a powdery film on the surface of receipts that easily transfers to skin and other things it touches. Hand lotions, oils and sanitizers can speed up the absorption process.

Thomas Zoeller Ph.D., co-chair of the Endocrine Society’s Global Task Force on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts, states that handling receipts can be harmful to your health. Endocrine disruptors such as BPA are chemicals that act like hormones in the body and may affect fertility and cause developmental defects.

According to a study by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG), some major chains including Target, Starbucks, and Bank of America ATM’s issue receipts that are BPA-free or only contain trace amounts. Major retailers using BPA-containing receipts in at least some outlets include McDonalds, CVS, KFC, Whole Foods, Walmart, Safeway and the U.S. Postal Service.

Here are some tips from the EWG on the safe handling of receipts:

  • Minimize receipt collection by declining receipts at gas pumps, ATMs and other machines when possible.
  • Store receipts separately in an envelope in a wallet or purse.
  • Never give a child a receipt to hold or play with.
  • After handling a receipt, wash hands before preparing and eating food (a universally recommended practice even for those who have not handled receipts).
  • Do not use alcohol-based hand cleaners after handling receipts. A recent study showed that these products can increase the skin’s BPA absorption (Biedermann 2010).
  • Take advantage of store services that email or archive paperless purchase records.
  • Do not recycle receipts and other thermal paper. BPA residues from receipts will contaminate recycled paper.
  • If you are unsure, check whether paper is thermally treated by rubbing it with a coin. Thermal paper discolors with the friction; conventional paper does not.
Until next time…
