How Did You Celebrate Earth Day?

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

Earth Day events were held in 192 nations last Friday, April 22, to encourage people to take a serious look at their personal practice of being kind to the earth and to always recycle, reuse and reduce. Does the annual celebration of Earth Day encourage you to be more mindful of how you consume, and to keep the planet clean as you do?

Earth

I know that for me, every day is Earth Day. At the office, we recycle and reuse everything we can. We are conservative with water usage and turn on lights and air conditioning in rooms as needed.  I happily drive a Prius that gets amazing mileage with very little carbon footprint.

According to a story on CNN, this year’s Earth Day found the planet on a much cleaner path than the previous year. Solar energy is becoming more affordable, twice as much money worldwide was invested in clean energy last year as in coal and gas, and the popularity of electric cars is steadily increasing.

The official Earth Day website is gearing us up for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day coming up in 2020. Trees for the Earth is the theme, with the ambitious goal of planting 7.8 billion trees worldwide. Trees absorb excess CO2 from our atmosphere, help keep the air we breathe cleaner and create communities.

How can you keep the celebration of Earth Day alive in your home and community?  It’s never too late to get started!  Start separating and bagging your recyclables. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. Run your dishwasher and clothes washer only with a full load. Take a deep breath. Doesn’t that feel better?

You Need to See Bought

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

If you’ve either been a friend or patient of mine for any amount of time, you know that I rarely recommend a movie. But this one is different. It’s not entertainment, but rather a very revealing look at how the future is being engineered for our children and grandchildren.

The name of the film is Bought, and complete information, a free movie trailer and free worldwide screening info can be found at http://www.boughtmovie.com/.

Bought is not a radical film but rather a mainstream documentary that exposes the ugly truth behind vaccines, GMOs and big pharmaceutical companies. Featuring exclusive interviews with the world’s most acclaimed experts in research, medicine, holistic care and natural health… Bought exposes the hidden story behind it all.

I urge you take the time to see this film and consider the facts. Share it with your friends. Discuss it with your family. You can view Bought for free through April 28 by visiting http://www.boughtmovie.com/.

Save Green $ by Going Green

Posted on Updated on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

April 22 is coming up next week, marking the 46th anniversary of Earth Day. Did you know that you can save money by going green?  Here are a few suggestions that you might want to consider as you join us in celebrating Earth Month!

Aibp5R7i4

Carpool to work. The average American commutes 16 miles each day to work. And the average car gets 23 miles to the gallon. At the average price of $3.68 per gallon of gas, that’s about $26 a week or $1300 a year. Rideshare with a co-worker who lives nearby and you both save $650 a year!

Buy an affordable, fuel-efficient car.  If carpooling doesn’t work for you, think about trading in your super-sized SUV for a smaller, more fuel-efficient car and save hundreds, even thousands a year. There are more options than ever today and hybrids galore.

Start a vegetable garden. Love fresh veggies? Have a nice sunny spot in your yard?  Then plant a garden. You can choose the seeds and what you use for fertilizer, guaranteeing healthy produce. And you will certainly earn bragging rights at family dinners.  And did I mention the savings? From $25 and up to hundreds a year, depending upon what and how much you grow.

Cash in your recyclables.  I’m assuming you already recycle everything you can.  Instead of paying your local sanitation company to take it all away, separate recyclable plastics and glass.  Look online for a local recycling company that will give you cash for your recyclables and turn them in on a regular basis.  Your cash yield will depend upon quantity.

Make your own natural cleaning and personal care products.  According to several studies I spied online, depending upon your buying habits you can save up to $400 a year — and potentially your health — by making your own natural cleaning and personal care products.  Do you know what’s in the stuff you wipe down your floors with or slather on your face at night?  Reading labels can be very revealing.  Simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice and coconut oil can do wonders.  Go online and look up natural cleaning products and natural personal care products and find a few reliable resources for basic ideas and go from there.

Cut back on eating out. Perhaps the most immediate way to save is by brown bagging. We’re not talking peanut butter and jelly. More like yummy, healthy homemade food. If you bring food you disdain with you to the office, chances are you won’t eat it. So weekly cooking/food planning is key. The cost of eating out is constantly going up. Just try to eat something healthy with a beverage for under $10. If you can’t handle brown bagging daily, start out with just two days a week.  That found money will certainly be an encouragement!

Do a home energy audit. The average American household spends $1900 a year on energy bills and a lot of that energy is wasted. Homes that were built before Energy Star standards can benefit from simple improvements that will save you cash. Burbank Water and Power, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Glendale Water and Power all offer information, tools and programs on their websites that will help you  cut your annual costs.

Happy Earth Month!

Celebrate Earth Month with Us!

Posted on

Greetings from Dr. Thorburn:

April 22 marks the 46th anniversary of Earth Day, and on this day over a billion people in 192 countries are expected to take action to protect our shared environment.

Earth

But why wait for just one day?  Why not celebrate and care for our precious environment all month long?  The changes you make today have a greater likelihood to become a part of your lifestyle if you repeat them over time.

Here are a few great suggestions from the official Earth Day website with a few of our own thrown in for good measure:

  • Stop using disposable plastic bags. We all have a collection of cloth bags gathering dust in the trunk of our cars. Use them instead. Remember to bring them in to the store. And if you do forget, ask for a paper bag.
  • Start composting. If you live where you have a yard or garden, you can compost. More than a billion pounds of food are thrown away each year. Help make a difference by turning your food waste into soil.
  • Buy local produce. Eat fresher and healthier by buying local produce. Look for the closest Farmer’s Market to where you live and become a regular shopper.
  • Reduce junk mail. Instead of just recycling the endless pile of paper waste in your mailbox each week (I don’t mean your bills – ads and circulars are what I’m talking about!) you can call the companies who are sending them and tell them that you just don’t want it.
  • Recycle your e-waste. Every year, thousands of old electronic devices — we’re talking big old TV’s, computer printers, etc. — are tossed into landfills, polluting the environment when they can be recycled. Go on line and find out where you can take your old electronics for recycling.
  • Use less water.  The city of Los Angeles just announced that we are reaching our water conservation goals. This is no time to get lazy! Turn the water off when you brush your teeth. Take shorter showers. Run the clothes and dishwasher with full loads only. The drought isn’t over yet.

Happy Earth Month!
